Street Fighter Movie Loses Release Date After Finding New Director

Sony Pictures has revealed that the scheduled release of the Street Fighter film has been taken off their calendar, but this doesn’t automatically imply that the project has been canceled entirely.

The Street Fighter film was initially scheduled to premiere on March 20, 2026, but it has now been removed from Sony’s release schedule. This seems like an unanticipated decision, given that a new director, Kitao Sakurai, joined the project in late February, taking over from the previous co-directors, the Philippou brothers.

It’s possible that this advancement indicates the Street Fighter movie is moving forward, though at the moment, there isn’t a set release date, as Variety mentioned.

Back in 1994, some moviegoers might remember a Street Fighter film featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme. This film earned nearly $100 million at the box office. However, the reboot of this series, titled Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, starring Kristin Kreuk, flopped in cinemas in 2009.

For those eagerly awaiting the Street Fighter movie, another martial arts film adaptation, Mortal Kombat 2, is set to premiere in cinemas this coming October instead.

Alongside Street Fighter, a number of other video game adaptations are currently in production. Upcoming releases include “A Minecraft Film” on April 4 and “The Until Dawn Movie” on April 25. Take a look at the gallery below for details on all the upcoming video game movies being developed.
