After being in development for quite some time, the upcoming Street Fighter film is gaining momentum once more as Kitao Sakurai, known for Bad Trip and The Eric Andre Show, has officially been appointed as the director by Legendary Entertainment, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
In partnership with Legendary, the game company Capcom is jointly creating and producing a film based on their franchise. This film will be handled by Sony Pictures for distribution, and it’s scheduled to hit theaters on March 20, 2026.
Many moviegoers might remember that a Street Fighter film was released in 1994, featuring Jean-Claude Van Damme. This movie earned close to $100 million at the time. However, the reboot, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, starring Kristin Kreuk, did not fare well in cinemas when it came out in 2009.
Initially, the upcoming Street Fighter film planned to have directors Danny and Michael Philippou (known as Talk to Me), the Australian twin brothers, at the helm. However, due to scheduling issues with their upcoming project titled Bring Her Back, they were forced to withdraw from the Street Fighter movie.
Over time, the Street Fighter game collection has achieved tremendous success, with its different versions selling millions. Among them, Street Fighter V from 2016 holds the title of the best-selling game in the franchise, having sold a staggering 7.7 million copies. As for the latest addition to the series, Street Fighter 6 released in 2023, it has already managed to sell an impressive 4.4 million copies. Collectively, the entire Street Fighter series has now surpassed 56 million copies sold.
Instead of delaying till 2026 for the Street Fighter film, fans can catch another fighting game adaptation, Mortal Kombat 2, in cinemas as early as October this year.
Beyond Street Fighter, a plethora of other video game films are currently under development, with two upcoming releases: A Minecraft Film on April 4th and an Until Dawn Movie set for release on April 25th.
