After fans discovered that an artwork from Capcom’s Street Fighter 6 art contest was generated by AI, Capcom decided to disqualify the entry from the competition.

In the New Challenger Edition of the Street Fighter Art Contest, artists had the opportunity to see their work showcased within the game and on Capcom’s official platforms. The winners were declared in July, but it didn’t take long for members of the community to notice some questionable aspects in one of the top submissions.

In the piece under scrutiny, Akuma was shown in an intense stance; however, viewers swiftly detected hints suggesting artificial intelligence’s influence, as they highlighted distorted fingers, discrepancies in lighting, and various visual errors typical of computer-made artwork.

The swift reaction against this incident has been validated, as Capcom has officially announced that the entry was disqualified due to rule violations.

Following several days under close public observation, Capcom released an official statement on July 25, aimed at resolving the ongoing issue that had sparked debate within the community.

As a gamer, I received an unfortunate message from the game’s publisher. They informed me that my winning entry didn’t make the cut due to some rules violations they’d found in Section 5, specifically about submission and design requirements. After giving it a thorough look and discussing it with their team, Capcom decided to disqualify my entry from the competition.

Even though the submission was disqualified, Capcom announced that the artwork remains viewable in the Battle Hub until the ongoing voting period concludes. The company expressed its gratitude towards those who took part in voting for the disqualified entry. In due course, they will replace the disputed illustration with a new one for the character it represents.

It’s evident from the context and timing that the reason for the disqualification was because the work in question utilized AI, which goes against the rule that all submissions must be exclusively original and created by humans.

Discussions about using AI-made art in fan contests have been rekindled, as numerous people are advocating for more stringent evaluation procedures to be implemented in upcoming events.
