Miloš Forman’s highly praised biographical film, “Amadeus,” has moved to a new streaming platform. Beginning this month, you can watch the 1984 Academy Award-winning Best Picture for free on Tubi. Additionally, other award-winning titles such as “Forrest Gump,” “Pulp Fiction,” “Titanic,” and “Thelma & Louise” are set to join Tubi’s library as well.
The movie “Amadeus” was based on a script written by Peter Shaffer, who had previously explored the same theme in his play from the late ’70s. His inspiration came from the 1830 stage play “Mozart and Salieri” penned by Russian author Alexander Pushkin. The film Amadeus portrays the often disputed resentment of Antonio Salieri towards Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, as the young musical genius disrupted the musical world in Vienna during the mid-1700s, according to the summary of the movie on Rotten Tomatoes.
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (portrayed by Hulce), an exceptionally gifted young composer from Vienna, unexpectedly encounters a formidable rival in the disciplined and relentless Antonio Salieri (Abraham). Unaware of this rivalry, Mozart leads a carefree life, while his extraordinary talent causes envy in the devout Salieri. Overwhelmed by jealousy, Salieri becomes fixated on undermining Mozart’s success, eventually hatching a sinister plan that carries grave repercussions for both men.
The movie “Amadeus” features Tom Hulce playing Mozart and F. Murray Abraham as Salieri. Additionally, Elizabeth Berridge, Jeffrey Jones, Simon Callow, Christine Ebersole, Roy Dotrice, Cynthia Nixon, and Richard Frank also star in the film. This production was brought to life by Saul Zaentz, a three-time Academy Award winner known for producing Milos Forman’s “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest,” as well as “The Mosquito Coast” and “The English Patient.” Zaentz’s final production was another collaboration with Forman called “Goya’s Ghosts.
Is ‘Amadeus’ the Best Musical Biopic of All Time?
It’s challenging to dispute that the musical biopic Amadeus is unsurpassed as the greatest of all time. While films such as Walk the Line, Coal Miner’s Daughter, and The Doors are equally impressive in terms of their quality and public appeal, none seem as comprehensive and grandiose as Forman’s interpretation of Mozart. Despite its historical inaccuracies, it offers an intriguing exploration into the tormented psyche of a genius, tracing the development of a peculiar friendship that morphed from admiration to envy and hate.
The general consensus among critics and viewers was overwhelmingly positive. The film Amadeus proved to be a financial success, earning $90 million at the box office while only costing $18 million to produce. Critics adored this movie, with Amadeus currently holding an impressive 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Audience ratings are even higher, standing at a remarkable 95%. This positive response was reflected in the award season as well, where Amadeus shone brightly on the Academy Awards red carpet. It earned 11 nominations and won in eight categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor (Abraham), and Best Adapted Screenplay.
The movie Amadeus is one of only a few Hollywood epics that doesn’t have a Director’s Cut widely regarded as superior. Opinions differ on this matter, with some arguing that the original theater release is actually the better version, despite the omission of certain character plotlines. The version of Amadeus that will be added to Tubi’s collection is the original theater release, which runs for 161 minutes.
