Strategy set in the world of Pillars of Eternity is something many at Obsidian want. Josh Sawyer tells what’s standing in the way

The creators behind Pillars of Eternity envision crafting a sequel to the franchise with the tactical gameplay reminiscent of Fallout Tactics.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but notice that Josh Sawyer remains actively engaged online, frequently posting fresh content or even hosting live streams. During one such stream, the esteemed director of Fallout: New Vegas mentioned that many colleagues at Obsidian Entertainment harbor a strong desire to create “Pillars Tactics“.

In an interview back in September 2024, Sawyer initially discussed these plans for expansion, which was well before the launch of the newest game in the PoE universe: Avowed (as reported by PC Gamer). During this conversation, he also noted that despite a dedicated and passionate fanbase, the tactical strategy genre is relatively small.

To put it simply, this project might not be financially advisable given our current circumstances. This is particularly true since we’re yet to hear about the success of the studio’s latest game (despite Obsidian reportedly being content), and last year was marked by a significant increase in layoffs within the gaming industry.

Nevertheless, during a recent charity broadcast, Sawyer expressed an idea that several team members from Obsidian Entertainment (with whom he collaborated as a consultant on the creation of Avowed), remain keen on creating a strategic version of “Pillars.

To put it in simpler terms, Sawyer explained that the team would need to think about how many staff members and resources they can dedicate towards developing a specialized project like “Pillars Tactics“. Regardless of how many tactical game enthusiasts might purchase it, it wouldn’t necessarily attract a substantial audience.

Indeed, there are other possibilities for revisiting the realm of Eora aside from Pillars of Eternity 3. However, regarding the potential sequel, Sawyer has emphasized that following the achievement of Baldur’s Gate 3, he would require financing similar to Larian Studios before seriously contemplating the third part. At this point, his focus is primarily on developing a fresh intellectual property instead.
