Suzanne Collins’ series is growing with the release of “Sunrise on the Reaping“. This prequel has sparked excitement among fans since its release in bookstores in March, and now there’s another reason to look forward to the film adaptation: Actress Maya Hawke from “Stranger Things” is set to play a key role.
In the upcoming movie “Sunrise on the Reaping,” Maya Hawke will portray Wiress, a past Hunger Games champion transformed into a District 12 mentor. She is recognized widely for her role as Robin Buckley in “Stranger Things,” with the series expected to resume in 2025 for its next season. By joining the Hunger Games universe, Maya Hawke expands her repertoire and adds significant value to an already strong cast for this film.
In the new adaptation titled “Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping“, Hawke teams up with Joseph Zada, who will portray a younger Haymitch Abernathy, a role previously played by Woody Harrelson in the initial movie trilogy. Whitney Peak joins as Lenore Dove Baird, Haymitch’s romantic interest, while Kelvin Harrison Jr. reprises the District 3 victor role of Beetee, originally played by Jeffrey Wright in “The Hunger Games“. Additionally, a younger Plutarch Heavensbee will be portrayed by a yet-to-be-named actor, who previously shared the screen with Hoffman in the 2012 drama “The Master“, where they played father and son. Philip Seymour Hoffman originally played the role of Plutarch Heavensbee in the original films.
24 years before the Hunger Games trilogy unfolds, I, as a movie buff, find myself immersed in “Sunrise on the Reaping,” a gripping prequel that takes us back to the bleak world of Panem. The tale begins on the fateful morning of the 50th Hunger Games reaping, where a 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy is tragically chosen as a tribute for this brutal competition. This particular year marks a Quarter Quell, a rare event that doubles the number of tributes, but only one victor is allowed to survive. The film will be expertly guided by director Francis Lawrence (known for his work in “Constantine” and “Red Sparrow”), with a script penned by Billy Ray, who also crafted the original Hunger Games movie’s screenplay.
Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping Has Very High Expectations to Meet
The upcoming movie, titled “Sunrise at the Harvest,” will mark the first Hunger Games film since 2023’s “The Hunger Games: Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes,” a prequel as well. The five preceding films have garnered over $3.3 million globally, with each one opening at number one in their debut weekends. Given that the budget for “Sunrise at the Harvest” is expected to be significantly higher than its predecessor, Lionsgate undoubtedly anticipates similarly impressive earnings.
The novel made a record-breaking debut among all the Hunger Games books written by Collins, according to reports. It sold an impressive 1.2 million copies in just the U.S., surpassing the initial sales of The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes and more than tripling those of Mockingjay. Given the continued interest in this story world, anticipation for the film adaptation of Sunrise on the Reaping is also high. However, the casting of Maya Hawke adds even more excitement for fans eagerly awaiting the prequel.
Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping will premiere Nov. 20, 2026.
