Stranger Things Season 5: Second Lowest IMDb Rating for Episode 7

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Stranger Things season 5

The fifth and final season of Stranger Things has received some of its lowest ratings on IMDb. Netflix surprised fans by announcing the season would be released in three parts. The first set of episodes came out in late November, the second on Christmas Day, and the final episodes will premiere on December 31st.

Splitting the latest season of Stranger Things into two parts hasn’t been entirely successful, and has actually drawn some criticism. The second half of season 5 (episodes 5-7) has received the lowest ratings on Rotten Tomatoes in the show’s history. Currently, viewers have given it a 67% approval rating, a sharp drop from the 77% it had earlier today. This is also much lower than the 91% approval rating the first part of the season received when it was released in November.

The latest season of Stranger Things isn’t being well-received online, either. Episode 7, “The Bridge,” currently has the second-lowest rating on IMDb, with a score of 6.6 out of 10 based on over 22,000 votes as of December 27th. This rating is likely to change as more people vote.

Top 5 Lowest-Rated Stranger Things Episodes on IMDb
Episode Title IMDb Rating Season & Episode Number
The Crawl 8/10 S5E01
The Mall Rats 7.9/10 S3E02
Suzie, Do You Copy? 7.8/10 S3E01
The Bridge 6.6/10 S5E07
The Lost Sister 6/10 S2E07

The latest episode of “The Bridge” is almost as low-rated as the seventh episode of Stranger Things season 2, “The Lost Sister.” That episode, which currently has a score of 6 out of 10 from over 42,000 voters, is the series’ lowest-rated so far. Viewers criticized “The Lost Sister” because it shifted focus away from several main Stranger Things characters to tell Eleven’s backstory.

As the table shows, Stranger Things consistently enjoys strong support from its fans, even for episodes that aren’t considered the best. However, “The Bridge” stands out as different because many viewers didn’t respond well to the central scene where Will comes out to his friends. The criticism varied, with some viewers feeling the scene didn’t fit with the more pressing, world-threatening events happening at the time.

However, some criticism was harsher. Many viewers felt the scene didn’t accurately or realistically portray what it would have been like for a teenager to come out to their friends in the 1980s. Others criticized the writing itself, and felt that actors Finn Wolfhard and Noah Schnapp didn’t fully capture the emotional weight of the scene for fans of Will and Mike’s relationship.

The problems with the second-to-last episode aren’t isolated to just one moment; they reflect broader concerns about the show’s writing choices and a reluctance to take risks. Considering how popular Stranger Things is worldwide, the biggest letdown might be that the second part of season 5’s finale—a full two hours long—didn’t quite deliver.
