Stranger Things Season 5 Brought The Walking Dead's Frank Darabont Out Of Retirement, Here's Why

As a long-time fan who’s witnessed the ebb and flow of the TV landscape over the past few decades, I must say, it’s truly heartening to see Frank Darabont, the genius behind iconic films like The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile, return to the silver screen after a decade-long hiatus. His decision to come out of retirement for Stranger Things Season 5 is not just a testament to his love for the show but also a beacon of hope in an industry often overshadowed by negativity and greed.

Back in 2010, Frank Darabont, both a writer and director, transformed the popular comic book series The Walking Dead into live-action for AMC, initiating a franchise. Unfortunately, Darabont was ousted from the show during the second season, leading to a protracted legal battle with AMC that lasted a decade. Since then, his only significant work has been Mob City in 2013. Now, after spending over a decade out of the industry, Darabont is disclosing the reasons behind his decision to rejoin the team for Stranger Things Season 5.

Darabont shared with The Daily Beast that it was the deep affection he and his wife have for this particular show that enticed him out of retirement. He explained that while current content often features unpleasant individuals committing unkind acts for selfish reasons, Stranger Things stands out due to its abundance of warmth and kindness – a quality that resonated strongly with him.

Before his work on The Walking Dead, Frank Darabont made a name for himself as a director on movies like The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Mist, and The Majestic. After receiving a $200 million settlement from AMC regarding the profits of The Walking Dead, he has the option to retire comfortably without needing to work again. However, he hasn’t ruled out coming back to work in the future.

Darabont remarked, “I’ve not yearned for the business, but I’ve certainly longed to work alongside imaginative individuals on a film set again.” He added, “Even if it turns out to be a single occasion, there’s still time left.

In the fifth season of Stranger Things, set to air on Netflix in 2025, two episodes were overseen by Darabont, while Shawn Levy (known for directing Deadpool and Wolverine) handled another. The co-creators Matt and Ross Duffer also contributed their directorial talents to several episodes of the final season.
