Strand Acquires Venice Competitor ‘Love’ by Dag Johan Haugerud for North America (EXCLUSIVE)

As a film connoisseur with over three decades of immersion in the silver screen world, I find myself consistently drawn to thought-provoking and intellectually stimulating cinematic offerings that challenge my perspectives on life, love, and human connection. The latest addition to my ever-growing collection of such gems is “Love,” a Norwegian masterpiece from Dag Johan Haugerud, the visionary mind behind the “Sex,” “Love” and “Dreams” trilogy. Having had the privilege of witnessing the enchanting “Sex” at Berlinale, I eagerly await the theatrical release of both films in spring 2025, courtesy of Strand Releasing.

Strand Releasing, a distributor specializing in art films, has acquired the rights to show “Love,” a movie by Norwegian director Dag Johan Haugerud, in North America. The movie will have its first showing on September 6 at the main competition of the Venice Film Festival. M-Appeal is responsible for handling global sales for this film.

In the “Sex,” “Love” and “Dreams” series by Haugerud, the most recent addition is titled “Love”. This trilogy explores contemporary romance and closeness, with each piece building upon the last. The opening chapter, “Sex”, was initially introduced at the Berlinale.

This spring of 2025, I’m thrilled to witness the theatrical release of two movies that Strand Cinema, celebrating its 35th anniversary this year, has added to its collection – one of which is “Sex.”

As a cinephile, I’d express it like this: “I found Haugerud’s movie to be remarkably insightful, thought-provoking, and distinctively original when it comes to portraying complex adult relationships. It also subtly challenges our societal norms around sex, love, and desire.” (Jon Gerrans, co-president of Strand)

“Story” of a pragmatic doctor named Marianne and a nurse named Tor, who shun traditional relationships, unfolds. One night, following a blind date, Marianne stumbles upon Tor on the ferry. Usually seeking casual connections with men during nights on this boat, Tor opens up about his encounters involving spontaneous intimacy. Piqued by his insights, Marianne ponders if such casual intimacy might be feasible for her as well.

Marianne is played by Andrea Bræin Hovig, and Tor is played by Tayo Cittadella Jacobsen.

M-Appeal has successfully secured distribution deals for the film in various countries, including France (Pyramide), UK and Ireland (Modern Films), Germany and Austria (Alamode), Italy (Wanted Cinema), Belgium, Netherlands, and Luxembourg (September Film), Spain (Filmin), Czech Republic and Slovakia (Pilot Film), and Switzerland (Xenix Film). All these distribution companies had previously obtained the rights for “Sex,” with plans to release the film in their respective territories through cinemas.

“Love,” which was developed by Yngve Sæther and Hege Hauff Hvattum under the production house Motlys, also received co-production support from Oslo Filmfond.

Strand has also added new films to his collection such as “Wild Diamond,” which premiered at the Cannes Competition, “Viet and Nam,” which was shown in Cannes’ Un Certain Regard section, and “Young Hearts,” which screened at Berlinale Generation.
