As a seasoned RTS player who has spent countless hours battling across galaxies and commanding armies in games like Warcraft III and StarCraft II, I was eagerly anticipating Stormgate’s release. Unfortunately, the early access launch hasn’t been the triumphant return of traditional RTS games that many had hoped for.
Yesterday marked the early access launch of the Stormgate strategy game, and it’s been generating a lot of buzz. Among all the releases this week, none have garnered more interest than this title on Steam. Moreover, some believe that this project could rejuvenate the RTS genre, given its team includes veterans who contributed significantly to hits like “Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos” and “StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty.” With such anticipation, we’re keeping an eye on the game’s performance a few hours post-launch on Steam Early Access.

It’s challenging to talk about our attendance success because:
As a long-time gamer with a penchant for strategy titles, I can appreciate the allure of the Early Access model, especially when it comes to games like Stormgate. However, I must admit that I was initially hesitant about spending money on this game given its current status. My experience has taught me to be cautious with Early Access games, as they often require patience and a willingness to deal with potential bugs and incomplete content.

Poor reception
A more concerning matter is that those who bought the game during its early access phase aren’t showing much excitement about it. Currently, Stormgate has a 56% positive rating on Steam, which is classified as a mixed response to the game.
As a devoted fan of StarCraft 2, I can’t help but feel let down by Stormgate’s technical imperfections and unoriginal gameplay. The fact that it seems to be a clone of my beloved game is troubling because, as fellow enthusiasts, we StarCraft 2 players have no compelling reason to switch to this title. It offers less content and appears to be plagued with more bugs. In the sea of RTS games out there, many reviewers are echoing the sentiment that Stormgate doesn’t offer anything new or exciting that we can’t find elsewhere.
Below we present a few reviews from Steam.
It’s fortunate that they offer a refund, despite the store page stating otherwise. Everything seems to be temporary or provisional. One might wonder where the reported budget of over 40 million went.
The game is utterly nonsensical, and the claim that it’s a “next gen RTS” is entirely false. Disregarding that tagline, the game doesn’t even come close to the caliber of Starcraft 2, Warcraft 3, or Age of Empires 4, although it shares more resemblance with Starcraft 2 (around 80%) and a bit of Warcraft 3 (about 20%). However, its main issue is that it doesn’t surpass any of these games in any aspect; it’s at least five to ten years behind.
1. The game is highly unfinished and will probably require several years to reach a satisfactory level of refinement. Unfortunately, it’s also excessively complex for the standard RTS player. To make matters worse, its striking resemblance to SC2 is so pronounced that one might question why the developers haven’t faced copyright infringement charges.
As a gamer, I can tell you that not every player shares a negative sentiment towards Stormgate. In fact, there are some who appreciate it, in spite of its technical hiccups. They commend the game’s performance and engaging gameplay, particularly during one versus one multiplayer battles. These players often enjoy the complexity of the game, seeing it as an asset rather than a drawback, as they anticipate prolonged entertainment from it.
Generally speaking, the launch of Stormgate has been underwhelming, leading us to wonder if the introduction of a free-to-play version might enhance its reputation. StarCraft 2 fans, however, have seen considerable potential in this title, but only if the developers can work on its technical issues. The key question is whether Stormgate will attract StarCraft 2 players or if they’ll continue to favor the original game.
