Steven Universe’s Space Outlaw Lars Stars in New Wild Cartoon Network Spinoff Unveiled at Annecy!

As a dedicated fan, I’m thrilled to share that my beloved “Steven Universe” franchise is growing with a fresh addition, titled “Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars.” This exciting new series is currently in development for streaming on Prime Video. The announcement was made during the Warner Bros. Animation, Cartoon Network Studios, and Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe showcase at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival by none other than the creator of “Steven Universe,” Rebecca Sugar herself!

Following a succinct greeting from studio president Sam Register, who made an impressive entrance as a figure resembling an Oz-like floating head surrounded by bursts of fire, it was announced that “Teen Titans Go!”, the longest-running animated series in DC’s history, has been renewed for its tenth season on Cartoon Network. This humorous show, inspired by DC’s teen superhero team, will once again delve into the lives of Robin, Starfire, Cyborg, Beast Boy, and Raven as they navigate both crime-fighting and the quirks of adolescence. Returning for this historic season are executive producers Luke Cormican, Peggy Regan, and Sam Register.

This year’s presentation by Cartoon Network Studios, Warner Bros. Animation, and Hanna Barbera studios deviated slightly from the usual format that regular attendees have grown accustomed to. Typically, executives provide a swift overview of various projects in the pipeline, but this time around, with several iconic creators present to mark 25 years of CNS, the spotlight was on the talent themselves.

Produced by Sugar in collaboration with her partner Ian Jones-Quartey, creator of “OK K.O.! Let’s Be Heroes”, the new series “Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars” continues the storyline from the original show, focusing on popular character Lars Barriga, who is depicted as an “immortal teenager and space outlaw.” As per the official summary, the spin-off will detail Lars and his pirate gang as they engage in activities such as smuggling illegal goods, dodging law enforcement, and unearthing the hidden truths of the collapsed Gem Empire.

As a movie reviewer, I’d say: “Back in 2013, ‘Steven Universe’ burst onto our screens and swiftly became a cultural juggernaut, garnering a Peabody Award for its exceptional storytelling, diversity, and emotional resonance. Now, we’re diving back into this captivating world with a new chapter that delves into the history, present, and future of the Steven Universe universe. This series has been a trailblazer in redefining modern animation, and I can’t wait to see where its rich lore takes us next!

Without prior warning, Sugar unexpectedly stepped out from the gathered crowd to showcase an innovative tune she penned specifically for the forthcoming second installment of CNS’s hit “Adventure Time” derivative, “Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake.

A number of scenes and photos have been unveiled from the second season, hinting at an expanded part for the Huntress in the upcoming episodes.

During today’s presentation, Adam Muto, the showrunner for “Adventure Time”, took charge of the segment focusing on “Adventure Time”-related topics. He also gave us a sneak peek at “Adventure Time: Side Quests”. The incomplete opening sequence was shown to the audience, and it will likely resonate strongly with fans of the original series due to its familiar feel.

J.G. Quintel, the mastermind behind “Regular Show”, gave us a sneak peek at his upcoming series, though he kept many details under wraps, even the title remains shrouded in mystery. However, he hinted that we’ll get a glimpse of some new characters from the show, but instead, he treated us to a tantalizing slideshow of enticing cartoon food items.

Quintel was more open about another of his ventures, the forthcoming YA animated series titled “Super Mutant Magic Academy,” which is inspired by the comic of the same name by Jillian Tamaki. A glimpse of the artwork and an animatic were shared, hinting that the show may fall between the lines of “X-Men” and “Harry Potter,” as its title suggests quite clearly.

At the Studio Focus event, renowned cartoonist Craig McCracken made an appearance, giving a sneak peek of his upcoming preschool version of “Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends.” Although designed primarily for young viewers, McCracken emphasized that the show wouldn’t necessarily be about education or ambition; instead, it would emphasize humor above all. A short animated clip demonstrated this, as Bloo taught his invisible companions that the day’s lesson was never to trust adults because they might make you eat broccoli.
