Steven Spielberg Gave This Twisters Note, And It Changed The Ending

As a huge fan of the original Twister film from 1996, I was both excited and skeptical about the release of its standalone sequel. The news that Twisters had become a surprise box office hit, surpassing expectations and even outperforming some highly anticipated movies, was truly astonishing.

The Twisters film has been making a huge splash at the box office, surprising many critics and initial predictions with earnings exceeding $80 million over the weekend. This standalone sequel to the 1996 hit featuring Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton has taken the top spot in the country’s box office and could potentially outshine anticipated blockbusters like Furiosa. However, there is ongoing discussion about what could have improved the movie. A renowned director even went so far as to rewrite the ending entirely for his vision.

In the film, it was planned for Daisy Edgar-Jones as Kate Carter and Glen Powell as Tyler Owens to share a kiss at some point. However, this scene was eventually removed from the movie. The anticipated romantic moment left both the actors and film critics surprised, as no such development occurred. Later on, executive producer Steven Spielberg stepped in.

“Edgar-Jones expressed his belief to Collider that the modification was reminiscent of Spielberg’s style. He went on to explain, ‘I believe it prevents the film from becoming overly predictable. Instead, it gives off a sense of continuity. Their story doesn’t end here; they remain connected through their mutual enthusiasm for something.'”

Powell concurred, explaining, “I believe the film isn’t primarily about them discovering love. Instead, it’s about Kate being drawn back to her true passion – storm chasing. By the end of the movie, they both experience this shared interest, which rekindles Kate’s passion and sense of belonging. A kiss seems out of place as a conclusion in this context. It’s a thoughtful observation from Spielberg. That’s why the boy remains dedicated to this pursuit.”

Through his Amblin production company, Spielberg served as an executive producer on the making of “Twisters.” This same label, Amblin, had previously produced the original “Twister” movie.

I was thrilled to discover that this film features an impressive ensemble cast. I’m particularly excited to see Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, David Corenswet, Maura Tierney, and Sasha Lane on screen. And what a heartwarming surprise to learn that Paxton’s son, James, makes a cameo appearance in the film. He wanted to honor his late father by giving a moving performance.

Twisters is now playing in theaters nationwide.
