Steve McQueen’s ‘Blitz,’ Starring Saoirse Ronan, to Close New York Film Festival

As a movie buff with a deep appreciation for historical dramas and the works of visionary filmmakers, I am thrilled to hear that Steve McQueen’s “Blitz” has been chosen to close the 62nd New York Film Festival. Having witnessed McQueen’s masterful storytelling in films like “12 Years a Slave,” “Hunger,” and “Lovers Rock,” I am eagerly anticipating this latest addition to his impressive body of work.

The historical drama “Blitz,” directed by Steve McQueen with acting by Saoirse Ronan, will be the closing film at the 62nd New York Film Festival.

The film “Blitz” will have its first screening in North America at Lincoln Center’s Alice Tully Hall on October 10th. Apple Original Films is producing this movie, which is set to hit theaters on November 1st before its worldwide debut on Apple TV+ on November 22nd.

McQueen, an Oscar-winning filmmaker known for “12 Years a Slave,” is both the writer and director of “Blitz.” Set during World War II, this film portrays the experiences of Londoners as they cope with the city’s bombing. The narrative unfolds through the eyes of Rita (Ronan), a single working-class mother, and her 9-year-old son George (newcomer Elliott Heffernan). As chaos engulfs their city, they become separated and must navigate its intricacies to reunite.

“With great pride, appreciation, and affection, I’m thrilled to bring ‘Blitz’ back to the New York Film Festival,” McQueen expressed. “I’ve had some wonderful moments here before and cherish the connection with New York audiences. I’m deeply grateful for the opportunity to close this year’s festival.”

McQueen has previously showcased several films at the New York Film Festival, such as “12 Years a Slave,” “Hunger” starring Michael Fassbender, the anthology “Lovers Rock,” and the documentary “Occupied City.”)

“Dennis Lim, artistic director of the New York Film Festival, described ‘Blitz’ as a vivid and tangible portrayal of life during war time. This meticulously researched historical account strongly resonates with our contemporary era marked by constant conflict. We are delighted to have Steve McQueen back at the festival, showcasing one of his most groundbreaking works and significant accomplishments in his career.”

As a film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for historical dramas and a strong connection to New York City, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the upcoming New York Film Festival in 2024. Having grown up in this vibrant city, I’ve attended many festivals over the years, each one leaving me with unforgettable memories and newfound perspectives.
