As a seasoned movie connoisseur with decades of watching and analyzing films under my belt, I must say that the recent turn of events at the Camerimage Film Festival has left me rather disheartened. The comments made by festival director Marek Zydowicz about women cinematographers, regardless of his subsequent apology, are deeply troubling and indicative of a mindset that needs to be left behind in the annals of cinema history.
Steve McQueen has decided not to attend the premiere of his latest film “Blitz” at the Camerimage Film Festival due to remarks made by the festival director regarding female cinematographers. Previously, he was scheduled to receive the distinguished director award during the event in Toruń, Poland.
McQueen stated through EbMaster that after reading Marek Zydowicz’s piece on female cinematographers, he won’t be attending the premiere of his film ‘Blitz’ this weekend. Despite his apology, McQueen finds the language used to be highly offensive and difficult to overlook. He holds great admiration for all cinematographers, regardless of gender, and feels it is crucial that we strive for improvement in order to create a more inclusive environment where everyone has an equal opportunity to thrive.
In an article for Cinematography World magazine, festival director Marek Żydowicz seemed to imply that increasing the number of female cinematographers and directors in the festival’s lineup might potentially result in the showcasing of “less exceptional films.
Should we abandon what is respected and valuable simply to allow room for social transformation?” he questioned. “Although festivals such as Cannes, Berlin, and Venice receive criticism for their selections due to conforming to or reinforcing [political or ideological viewpoints], Camerimage stands firm in upholding artistic merit as the primary factor for selecting and showcasing film art.
The opinion piece has stirred up heated debates regarding the upcoming festival, set to launch this coming Saturday, as it’s presenting the global debut of “Rust,” a Western film featuring Alec Baldwin, which tragically led to the fatal shooting of its cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins.
In reaction to Żydowicz’s statement, the British Society of Cinematographers publicly expressed their disappointment and outrage over your misogynistic comments and aggressive demeanor, which they believe reflect a deep-seated bias. A film festival that aims to promote and inspire cinematography and its artists should uphold higher standards.
In response, Żydowicz countered that the allegations in the letter were “completely unfounded and downright disrespectful.” He emphasized that respect for others has been his top priority, and it continues to be a cornerstone of our festival. He clarified that his article had no connection with disregard towards women and highlighted the diversity and inclusion policy on our festival’s website, which he claimed was developed in collaboration with Women in Cinematography.
Women in Cinematography refuted that the policies they suggested have been implemented, pointing to a petition they posted on Change.org in September outlining their call for change. They alleged that the new policy was only published on the website following backlash to Żydowicz’s comments.
As a movie critic, I find it crucial to address the recent statement made by Women in Cinematography regarding Mr Żydowicz’s campaign. They firmly believe that this initiative should not be misconstrued as a symbol of the festival’s dedication to diversity or as a means to deflect legitimate criticism from Camerimage Festival. This stance was clearly expressed in their response to the BSC’s open letter on November 9th.
Representatives for Camerimage did not immediately respond to EbMaster‘s request for comment.
The Hollywood Reporter was first to report the news.
