As a long-time admirer of Steve McQueen‘s work, I was absolutely thrilled to witness the dual celebration of his birthday and the world premiere of “Blitz” at this year’s BFI London Film Festival. The emotional intensity of the film, particularly during the mother-son storyline, was palpable, and it was a privilege to be part of that experience.
On Wednesday evening, Steve McQueen had a unique occurrence: he marked both the debut of his new movie and his birthday.
Titled “Blitz,” this McQueen war drama, featuring Saoirse Ronan and newcomer Elliot Heffernan, is set amidst Nazi Germany’s heavy bombardment of the U.K. during the years 1940 to 1941. This film kicked off the BFI London Film Festival for a second time, following McQueen’s 2018 release “Widows.” As the emotional mother-son narrative unfolded on screen, the audience applauded, with many expressing appreciation for Heffernan’s performance and some seen dabbing away tears.
At Royal Festival Hall, the movie director shared thoughts about the film’s somber theme and acknowledged another artist who has the same birthdate during his stage appearance.
He mentioned that he and the legendary British artist, John Lennon, celebrate the same birthdate. Currently, ‘Imagine’ is all that comes to mind, and it seems this hopeful tune is all we possess. The potential lies within us, and it’s up to us to make it a reality. So I’d like to express my gratitude to John Lennon for writing ‘Imagine’ on your special day.
Meanwhile, Ronan spoke about collaborating with Heffernan and reminisced about how she had started her acting journey around the same time. “What stands out for me from those initial years were the individuals who took their time, were enjoyable, and showed patience with me,” she said. “Elliot, however, was likely more mature than I was!
For Hefferman, with no prior acting experience in “Blitz”, one of the standout aspects of the “Blitz” set was the craft service area, where delicious food is prepared and there’s plenty to go around.
In a film produced by Apple Originals, Oscar-nominated actor Saoirse Ronan portrays Rita, a desperate mother who panics when her son George (played by Heffernan) goes missing after she sends him to the countryside from London during the Blitz. Alongside Ronan, the talented cast features Harris Dickinson, Erin Kellyman, Stephen Graham, Kathy Burke, Paul Weller, Leigh Gill, and Benjamin Clementine.
McQueen, responsible for writing, directing, and producing “Blitz,” has returned to the big screen since his last feature film in 2018 titled “Widows.” Recognized primarily for his direction of the 2014 movie “12 Years a Slave,” which garnered the Oscar for Best Picture and a nomination for him as Best Director.
Earlier on Wednesday at a press conference, Ronan pondered over the significance of the film in light of the growing international tension.
What made this filming journey feel incredibly authentic was that we’d shoot scenes filled with total disorder and turmoil, requiring us to depict characters in extreme fear and terror. Then, when we stepped off set, we’d tune into the radio or turn on the news, only to hear and see the same chaos unfolding. This was the first project I’ve been a part of where there wasn’t really an opportunity to step away from it all.
