Robert Irwin, son of the late Steve Irwin, described a scary moment on The Tonight Show when a crocodile named Jimmy Fallon—yes, after the host—did a ‘death roll’ on him.
Robert Irwin has a tradition of naming animals at the Australia Zoo after famous people. He recently named a kangaroo after Charli D’Amelio, who also won Dancing with the Stars, when she visited in April 2026.
A crocodile named after Jimmy Fallon is getting a lot of attention after its caretaker shared a surprising encounter with it on Fallon’s talk show.
Jimmy Fallon shocked by Robert Irwin’s encounter with huge crocodile named after him
During his fourteenth visit to The Tonight Show, Irwin shared a frightening story about a massive, 14-foot crocodile he’d nicknamed after Jimmy Fallon.
“He was really big,” Irwin said, much to Jimmy Fallon’s embarrassment. “So I jumped onto Jimmy’s back, and believe it or not, he flipped me over like a wrestler!”
Crocodiles kill and tear apart their prey using a behavior called ‘death rolling,’ where they grab an animal in their powerful jaws and spin rapidly. With a bite force of 4,000 PSI – the strongest of any animal – once a crocodile starts a death roll, escape is impossible.
I was pinned under him with my arm sticking out. He weighed around 700 pounds, and I didn’t know what to do. Thankfully, he rolled off me, and I was okay. He’s a really active guy, Jimmy.

People on social media are loving a recent story about Irwin’s son, applauding his ability to stay calm and think fast during a dangerous moment.
One X user commented that Robert Irwin has a knack for recounting even dangerous situations as if they were lighthearted stories.
“Imagine dying to Jimmy Fallon,” another joked.
Okay, so someone pointed out that maybe calling a massive, super-dangerous creature after a talk show host wasn’t the best idea. Apparently, it didn’t instantly become cuddly or anything. Who knew?
Okay, so I just saw this amazing video of Robert Irwin! It reminded me of that time last year when he saved a carpet python from a vending machine at the zoo. He was so calm and collected, even with all those sharp teeth! It’s just incredible how fearless and skilled he is with these animals – another viral moment for the Irwin family, honestly.
