As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for sports dramas and biopics, I can hardly contain my excitement upon hearing about the upcoming comedy “Saipan.” Having lived through the tumultuous events of 2002 Irish soccer history, I can attest to the intensity and emotion that surrounded the infamous fallout between Roy Keane and Mick McCarthy. The casting of Éanna Hardwicke as Keane and Steve Coogan as McCarthy is nothing short of inspired, and I eagerly await their on-screen chemistry.
The initial appearance of Éanna Hardwicke portraying the iconic soccer figure, Roy Keane, along with Steve Coogan in the role of the troubled Irish national coach, Mick McCarthy, from the forthcoming comedic biopic “Saipan,” has been unveiled.
The movie, initially unveiled earlier this year by EbMaster, recounts a notorious episode in Irish sports lore – the highly publicized rift between Keane and McCarthy. Besides Hardwicke and Coogan, the ensemble cast features Alice Lowe (“Sightseers”), Jamie Beamish (“Derry Girls”), Alex Murphy (“Young Offenders”), Harriett Cairns (“Bridgerton”), and Peter McDonald (“The Batman”).
The film titled “Saipan” is being helmed by Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa, who are known for directing movies like “Good Vibrations” and “Ordinary Love”. The script for this movie comes from Paul Fraser, the same writer behind “Dead Man’s Shoes”. Bankside Films will be responsible for sales and will showcase a promotional clip to potential buyers at the American Film Market.
“Saipan” – An Epic True-Life Comedy
The movie is being made by Macdara Kelleher and John Keville, from Wild Atlantic Pictures (known for “Evil Dead Rise,” “Cocaine Bear,” and “Black 47”), together with Trevor Birney and Oliver Butler of Fine Point Films (“Kneecap,” “No Stone Unturned”). Patrick O’Neill and Rachael O’Kane are the executive producers. The distribution rights for the UK and Ireland have been bought by Wildcard and Vertigo Releasing, who plan to release it in cinemas in 2025.
The movie’s name is inspired by the Saipan Incident of 2002, notoriously known in history, when Keane was leading the Irish national soccer team. During their World Cup preparation on the small island of Saipan, the passionate and fiery soccer star, renowned for his volatile temperament both on and off the field, had a highly publicized, extremely contentious argument with McCarthy. This altercation allegedly stemmed from dissatisfaction with training conditions, strategy, travel arrangements, food, as well as doubts about McCarthy’s abilities.
Following an interview with Keane in the Irish media, a significant conflict erupted at the team camp. It’s reported that Keane angrily scolded McCarthy in front of his teammates, telling him to “take your World Cup and put it where the sun doesn’t shine,” before returning to Ireland (however, McCarthy later claimed he had actually sent him home). This incident sparked a massive debate in Irish society over who was at fault. Keane didn’t represent his country again until 2004, after McCarthy had resigned as manager.
