The fate of Steve Carell’s brand-new comedy Rooster has just been revealed.
HBO has renewed its comedy series, Rooster, for a second season after just five episodes. The show is performing exceptionally well, becoming the highest-rated new comedy on HBO in the last decade. An average of 5.8 million viewers in the U.S. have watched each of the first four episodes.
The comedy is a hit with both audiences and critics, boasting an 88% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. This is a strong start, especially when compared to the first season of The Office, which received a 71% critic score. Overall, The Office averages an 81% rating from critics.
Showrunner Bill Lawrence shared that working on Rooster has been a standout achievement for both him and Steve Carell, and he thanked Warner Bros. Television and HBO for their collaboration on the series.
We’re incredibly thankful to Warner Bros. Television and HBO for their support, and to Casey, Amy, and Channing for letting us continue making the show with Steve and our fantastic cast. Working on this series has been a major achievement for both of us, especially for Matt.
Clancy Collins, head of Creative Affairs at Warner Bros. Television, praised the renewal of Rooster, calling it well-earned. He also commended creator Keith Lawrence and co-showrunner Matt Tarses, saying they are exceptionally talented at what they do.
Rooster is a genuinely charming and lovable show, and it’s great to see it get a second season – it truly earns it. Bill Lawrence and Matt Tarses are exceptionally talented at creating heartwarming and funny stories, and they’ve done so again with a fantastic cast, especially Steve Carell. Everyone at HBO and Doozer is excited to keep working on this show.
Bill Lawrence is famous for creating the popular medical comedy Scrubs, which recently returned to television on ABC, and for co-creating the acclaimed Apple TV+ comedy Ted Lasso, with new episodes coming this summer. Zach Braff, who starred in Scrubs, also directed two episodes of Rooster.
Amy Gravitt, HBO’s head of comedy series, shared her excitement for the second season of the show, hinting that it will be set during the spring semester. The first season took place in the fall, and the new season will follow Rooster as the story continues.
We’re thrilled audiences are loving Rooster as much as we did when Steve, Bill, and Matt first created the character. We’re excited to see what happens next for this amazing group, and we’re working with our partners at WBTV and Doozer to bring Ludlow’s Spring Semester to life.
As hinted by Gravitt, the show Rooster is set at Ludlow College. It follows Greg Russo, played by Carell, who gets a job as a writer-in-residence and ends up working with his daughter, Katie. While they try to connect with each other, Katie is going through a difficult and overwhelming breakup.
Steve Carell stars in Rooster alongside Charly Clive, Danielle Deadwyler, Phil Dunster, John C. McGinley, and Lauren Tsai.
The actor launched his career as a correspondent on The Daily Show. He later became famous for his role on the American version of The Office, where he starred for nine seasons.
Since leaving The Office in 2011, Steve Carell has continued to work steadily, notably voicing the character of Gru in the Despicable Me and Minions movies, and appearing in films like The Big Short and Vice.
Steve Carell has been busy on television, creating the comedy Angie Tribeca and appearing in popular shows like The Morning Show, Space Force, and The Four Seasons.
His new show, Rooster, is already a success! Five episodes are still to come this season, airing each week, with the last one planned for May 10th.
Rooster airs Sundays at 10 p.m. EDT on HBO.
