As a seasoned movie enthusiast with years of cinematic adventures under my belt, I must admit that the news about Sterling K. Brown joining the cast of the live-action “Voltron” film has sent a thrill down my spine! With his exceptional talent and versatile acting skills, showcased in critically acclaimed projects like “The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story,” “This is Us,” and “Black Panther,” Brown brings an undeniable charm to any screen he graces.
Sterling K. Brown will star in the live-action “Voltron” film for Amazon MGM Studios.
Brown is set to team up with Henry Cavill, who was previously announced for the cast (“Man of Steel”), along with Daniel Quinn-Toye, a newcomer in films who has appeared on TV shows like “Badults” and stood as Tom Holland’s understudy in “Romeo & Juliet” on the West End this spring. The movie will also include Rita Ora and John Kim.
This year, Brown was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor award at the Oscars for his role in Cord Jefferson’s “American Fiction”. He also appeared with Jennifer Lopez and Simu Liu in Netflix’s “Atlas”. Before that, he delivered Emmy-winning performances in shows like “The People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story”, “This is Us”, “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel”, “Black Panther” and “Honk For Jesus. Save Your Soul”. Upcoming projects for Brown include starring in Dan Fogelman’s Hulu series “Paradise” alongside James Marsden and Julianne Nicholson.
The movie is being directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, who co-wrote the script with Ellen Shanman. Notably, Thurber previously wrote and directed “Red Notice,” an action film on Netflix released in 2021 featuring Gal Gadot, Ryan Reynolds, and Dwayne Johnson (also known as The Rock). Additionally, he was behind “Skyscraper” in 2018, another project led by Dwayne Johnson.
Currently, specifics about the plot are being closely guarded. The production is overseen by Todd Lieberman (via Hidden Pictures), Bob Koplar, as well as David Hoberman from Thurber and Hobie Films.
The “Voltron” TV series revolves around a group of space travelers who control a massive transforming robot. Originating from various Japanese anime television shows produced by Toei Animation, it has led to multiple American spin-offs, such as the eight-season show “Voltron: Legendary Defender,” which was created for Netflix.
Brown is represented by Jennifer Wiley-Moxley from JWM Entertainment Group, Creative Artists Agency (CAA), Jill Fritzo Public Relations, and the law firm of Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole.
The Hollywood Reporter was first to break the news.
