A significant trend associated with author Stephen King came to an end following a critically acclaimed 8-year series with a 91% rating, but a forthcoming adaptation of his work may mark the end of this dry spell and rekindle the once popular theme. Despite numerous new adaptations of Stephen King’s works appearing in television and film on occasion, 2025 stands out as one of the most successful years for screen interpretations of his stories.
The new year kicked off with a bang as “The Monkey” was successfully adapted, drawing substantial crowds at cinemas worldwide. However, it appears that Mike Flanagan’s “The Life of Chuck” may have been overlooked by audiences, but it managed to receive positive feedback from both viewers and critics on a global scale. Future adaptations such as “The Long Walk”, “The Running Man”, and “IT: Welcome to Derry” seem promising based on their potential.
Among all the modern adaptations of Stephen King’s works, one stands out as particularly enticing due to its potential for ending a prolonged hiatus in television productions inspired by the renowned author’s stories.
Stephen King Should Make His First TV Adaptation Cameo Since Mr. Mercedes In The Institute
Stephen King Hasn’t Cameoed In A TV Adaptation Since 2017
At one point, Stephen King frequently made brief, entertaining appearances in the television and film adaptations of his works. These appearances didn’t usually contribute significantly to the main plots of the respective movies or shows, but they often served as lively and engaging winks acknowledging King of Horror’s active participation in the productions.
I must admit, it’s been quite some time since Stephen King graced our screens as a character in one of his own TV adaptations. His last on-screen appearance was back in 2017’s “Mr. Mercedes,” specifically in season 1, episode 6 titled “People in the Rain.” In this chilling episode, King made a brief but memorable appearance as a deceased diner patron, with a knife protruding from his neck. Quite a haunting sight!
Since Jack Bender, known for directing episodes of Mr. Mercedes, is also taking charge of the upcoming TV adaptation of The Institute by Stephen King, there’s a great chance for another cameo from the author to appear in the series. What makes this even more likely is that Stephen King himself is serving as an executive producer on the show, increasing his involvement.
It’s worth mentioning that during the 2020 adaptation of Stephen King’s “The Stand,” he made a brief appearance, albeit not in person. In this series, he was depicted as a man on a poster, but did not appear on screen. Unlike “The Stand,” King appeared in “It: Chapter Two,” but that is a film, not a TV adaptation.
Stephen King Appearing In The Institute Would Likely Continue His Recent TV Cameo Role Streak
His Appearance Would Offer His Long-Time Followers A Nostalgic Nod
If executed effectively, The Institute is expected to excel both critically and financially, regardless of whether Stephen King appears in it. Nonetheless, having him in the show would make for an ideal tribute to his earlier collaborations on his television series.
It’d be intriguing to imagine King appearing as a character again, much like he did in Mr. Mercedes and Under the Dome (both directed by Jack Bender), within the context of The Institute. Interestingly, this could subtly link three series adapted from King’s works, as they each inhabit their own unique storylines.
