Stephen King’s Holly Gibney Character Gets TV Show Adaptation

With so many Stephen King adaptations happening right now, it’s easy to forget about one that’s been in development for a while – over three years, actually! I’m really excited about this one because it focuses on what I think is King’s best character of the last twenty years. He’s a true hero, and we’ve seen him change so much throughout the recent books.

Holly Gibney is a remarkably well-developed and popular character, appearing in more of Stephen King’s books over the last fifteen years than anyone else. While she’s been in two TV shows before, she’s poised to be the central figure in a new screen adaptation soon.

After impressive roles in Mr. Mercedes and The Outsider, where Justine Lupe and Cynthia Erivo both delivered standout performances, Holly Gibney is ready for her own show. Even with limited screen time, she’s quickly become one of the most compelling characters in any TV adaptation of a Stephen King story.

Stephen King’s Holly Gibney Is Getting Her Own TV Show

Jack Bender, who directs, writes, and produces, has been developing a TV series based on Stephen King’s novel Holly since late 2023. Progress has been a bit slow because he’s also been writing episodes of The Institute, another Stephen King story available on MGM+. However, fans can expect Holly to eventually arrive.

Plus, the story is in good hands with a director known for successful crime thrillers and adaptations of Stephen King’s work. Fans of the horror series From will also be happy to learn that John Bender has written for all three seasons of that show.

Holly Gibney takes center stage in this novel, set during the peak of the Covid-19 pandemic. She’s investigating a disturbing murder while also dealing with her own personal struggles. It’s one of Stephen King’s most unsettling books in recent years, largely due to the truly horrifying nature of the villains.

Holly Gibney Is King’s Best Character Of The 21st Century

Holly Gibney stands out as one of Stephen King’s most compelling characters in recent years. First introduced as an intriguing and quirky figure, she has evolved into a truly memorable and central protagonist across five novels and a novella.

The novel Holly is a key story in Holly Gibney’s journey to becoming a central character. It follows her as she starts working as a full-time private investigator with retired detective Bill Hodges. Along with the story “If It Bleeds,” which comes before it in her development, Holly solidifies her place as a leading character.

Initially, the character is withdrawn and struggles with severe social anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder. But by the time we see her in the book Holly, she’s learned to use her obsessive nature to her benefit, combining it with an exceptional ability to analyze crimes and a remarkable memory. She’s also become brave enough to confront threats directly, even those that seem supernatural and confusing.

Gibney Has Already Featured In Mr. Mercedes And The Outsider

Holly Gibney’s character has begun to evolve on screen in both Mr. Mercedes and The Outsider – the latter is often considered a flawless Stephen King television adaptation. Since Jack Bender worked on Mr. Mercedes, his upcoming Holly series will likely feature a Holly Gibney similar to how Justine Lupe played her.

Cynthia Erivo’s portrayal of Holly in The Outsider—a character with almost supernatural intuition, reminiscent of having ‘the shining’—really captivated audiences. Now, fans are eager to see what version of Holly Gibney Jack Bender delivers in the new show Holly, and who will take on the role. Either way, it’s a series that promises to be thrilling.
