Stephen Frears Tapped to Helm ‘The Anarchy’ Series for Wiip, Roy Kapur Films (EXCLUSIVE)

Renowned Oscar-winning filmmaker, Stephen Frears, will oversee the direction and production of a television series based on William Dalrymple’s acclaimed book “The Anarchy: The Relentless Rise of the East India Company”. This project is being developed by the international independent studio Wiip, in collaboration with Roy Kapur Films from India.

The joint production of a new project brings back screenwriters Walon Green, Amit Bhalla, and Lucas Jansen, who previously worked together on Apple TV+’s “Hello Tomorrow!”. This upcoming series is set to be developed in both the U.K. and Asia.

Dalrymple’s historical epic portrays how the East India Company, functioning as an unregulated startup from a modest London office, managed to seize control over the entire Indian subcontinent, which accounted for over a quarter of the global GDP at that time.

The historical epic by Dalrymple narrates how an unregulated startup-like East India Company, based in a small London office, gained control over the entire Indian subcontinent, which represented more than one-fourth of the world’s GDP.)

Frears stated that one of today’s most relevant topics revolves around a relentless business tycoon and his conglomerate amassing control, a cabal of oligarchs capturing a significant portion of the globe, stripping assets, plundering, manipulating stocks, and sabotaging economies for their gain. This mirrors the actions of the East India Company in the 18th century when they effectively stole India.” (In this version, I’ve tried to keep the original meaning but made it more readable and concise.)

2019 saw the release of a remarkable book that made it onto former President Barack Obama’s list of top 10 recommended reads, and also earned recognition as one of The Wall Street Journal’s standout titles for the year.

Siddharth Roy Kapur, head of Roy Kapur Films, extolled Frears for having directed some cherished films over the past four decades, stating that his involvement was a truly fulfilling dream.

The executive production team comprises Paul Lee from Wiip (who worked on “Mare of Easttown”), Roy Kapur (known for “Dangal”), and Naz Haider from Xpat Productions, along with the writing staff. Dalrymple will take on a creative advisory role, while John Burnham will be responsible for production.

Green stated: “In addition to its historical grandeur and almost legendary backdrop, there’s another aspect that echoes ominously: an epic greed; where a small group of affluent individuals, seeking to boost their own wealth and indulge their excessive ambitions, can shape the fate of many millions.

Haider emphasized: “This tale carries immense relevance in our contemporary era, particularly considering how large corporations frequently enjoy greater advantages and safeguards than average citizens. ‘The Anarchy’ has the potential to mirror India’s equivalent of ‘The Crown’, offering an engaging origin story yet to be explored.

In 2023, Frears was given knighthood; he’s been recognized with two Academy Award nominations for his directorial work on “The Grifters” (1991) and “The Queen” (2007). Among his many works are “Dangerous Liaisons,” “High Fidelity,” “Philomena,” and the Emmy-nominated miniseries titled “A Very English Scandal.

Wiip’s lineup features the Emmy-winning “Mare of Easttown,” “Dickinson,” as well as the upcoming series starring Mark Ruffalo titled “Task.” Roy Kapur Films is known for producing notable films such as “The Sky Is Pink,” “Rocket Boys,” and the Indian film that made it to the shortlist for the 95th Academy Awards, “Last Film Show.
