Initially released exclusively on PlayStation in 2024, the action-adventure game Stellar Blade has garnered a larger fanbase now that its PC version has been launched, surpassing its previous level of popularity.
To date, the game has gained significant traction on social media platforms due to its appealing character presentations. These characters are dressed in form-fitting attire, revealing much skin, and their movements have been choreographed in a way that caters to many viewers’ preferences.
BUT!
Beyond its visual appeal and physical interactions, what other elements does this game present? Or is it merely about aesthetics and interactive physics, or does it boast an engaging narrative and game mechanics as well?
How Good Is Stellar Blade Really?
As a gamer, I was initially drawn to Stellar Blade by its eye-catching visuals and over-the-top characters that seemed tailor-made for fans. But upon diving in, I found there’s more to this game than meets the eye. Beneath the fan service lies a solid action-adventure title with quick-paced battles, engaging storytelling, and an amazing soundtrack that really sets the mood.
Combat
The core of Stellar Blade lies in its thrilling combat, which is what sets it apart. Its gameplay combines aspects of Bayonetta, Nier: Automata, and Star Wars Jedi: Survivor. You’ll dart around, block, and retaliate against enemies in quick, rhythmic skirmishes, interspersed with special moves, ranged attacks, and adaptive abilities. Even common foes can pose a significant challenge, creating a sense of tension that makes every encounter feel tense yet rewarding.
Story
Although the narrative may not be exceptionally original or groundbreaking, it effectively maintains player interest as you assume the role of Eve, a soldier tasked with battling extraterrestrial beings known as Naytibas on the devastated Earth. As events unfold and things take a turn for the worse, Eve finds herself in a position to save the planet alongside only a few companions. The plot incorporates typical sci-fi elements and offers a couple of expected surprises, but its immersive world-building and character dynamics help drive the story forward. Regrettably, certain side missions and dialogue can occasionally feel slow and tedious, while the voice acting may seem disjointed from the visuals at times.
Music
However, Stellar Blade surpasses anticipations significantly in its captivating soundtrack. During intense boss fights, it pumps up the volume with powerful metal tunes that harmonize flawlessly with the game’s pulse-pounding intensity. The metal tracks intensify the action, while softer melodies underscore the tranquil moments between combats. The overall audio design is exceptional and enhances the impact of weapons, combat, and environmental cues.
While Stellar Blade might not appeal to everyone due to its extensive fan service elements that some may find off-putting, beneath its vibrant surface lies an entertaining action game with engaging combat, compelling narrative, and top-notch music. If you’re primarily interested in the gameplay experience, there’s a wealth of enjoyment to be had.
