Valve is making it easier for gamers with disabilities to find games that are accessible to them.
Gabe Newell’s company consistently rolls out updates, enhancing both user and developer experiences on the widely-used PC digital distribution service known as Steam. They recently reiterated their commitment to continuous improvements and hinted at forthcoming alterations in their March development update.
According to the latest update from Valve, future enhancements will primarily concentrate on accessibility features that numerous creators have incorporated in recent times. These additions will enable a broader range of gamers, including those presumed incapable of enjoying numerous games due to various reasons, to participate and enjoy video gaming.
Despite many games incorporating such support, it’s not universal across all games, even disregarding older ones. Not every game on the market caters to these accessibility features. Therefore, we are proposing a new questionnaire for developers and publishers to clarify the accessibility options in their games. This includes adjustments for the audiovisual layer, difficulty level, and data input, such as converting written text to speech and vice versa.
Steam users can expect access to the new information being provided by Valve once publishers have filled it up (giving them some time for this). This update will incorporate details from game cards and enhancements to the Steam search engine, as shown in the company’s recent screenshot.
In practice, while it’s not compulsory, developers are likely to incorporate these new “tags” in their games. The reason being, these tags will help gamers discover titles with specific accessibility features once they apply the appropriate filters. For detailed instructions, developers can refer to the Steam partners help page.
