As a seasoned gamer with decades under my belt, I’ve seen the rise and fall of many gaming platforms. But none has been as consistent and influential as Valve’s Steam. Now, after two decades, they’re shaking things up, and I, for one, am all for it!
For about two decades, Steam, developed by Valve, has been a leading platform for PC video games. Currently, Valve is leveraging its influence to establish fresh regulations concerning season passes and downloadable content (DLC) distributed via Steam. Some of the modifications include requiring publishers to supply descriptions for each DLC piece, along with a timeframe of three months for launch. Publishers will be allowed to adjust the release date of their DLC only once, within a three-month window following the initial schedule; otherwise, Valve might intervene by refunding players the cost of the DLC if necessary.
When you provide a Season Pass through Steam, it implies that you’ll deliver future content. When setting up a Season Pass, you’ll need to establish a release schedule for each piece of content within the pass. This timeline is a promise both to your customers and Steam. If you can’t clearly define what’s included in each DLC and when it will be ready for launch, it’s best not to offer a Season Pass on Steam.
Furthermore, Valve is now limiting season passes to partners who have a long-standing relationship with them and demonstrate a strong history on Steam. Games offering season passes must already have at least one DLC available upon launch, except for those included in pre-orders of deluxe editions. This rule applies generally.
The rules serve two main purposes: they help players understand exactly what they’re buying, and provide a method for obtaining refunds if publishers fail to adhere to Valve’s latest standards. However, it’s important to note that Steam has other challenges as well. Recently, a US Senator alleged that Valve allows hateful content to proliferate on Steam without proper moderation. On a brighter note, Valve has announced that the upcoming Steam Deck 2 will be a significant improvement over its predecessor, not just an incremental hardware and power upgrade.
