Steam Machine Price: Valve May Have Just Given The Best Clue Yet

Valve hasn’t revealed the price of the Steam Machine, leading to much speculation. While still not giving a firm number, Valve recently offered what seems to be their clearest hint yet, explaining that they’re currently unable to share pricing details because of various outside factors.

Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais, speaking at the Skill Up event co-hosted by Lucy James of TopMob, stated that the Steam Machine will likely cost about the same as building a PC with similar capabilities.

We’re aiming to price our system similarly to what it would cost to build a comparable PC from individual components. Ideally, we want to offer a better deal, and we’re currently working on finalizing pricing. It’s difficult to give a firm price right now due to various external factors impacting costs.

Rising prices in 2025 have been partly caused by factors like tariffs – taxes on imported goods – which US President Donald Trump reintroduced, a move that proved controversial.

During the interview, Griffais also stated that Valve won’t be selling the Steam Deck at a loss like Microsoft, Sony, and Nintendo have done with their consoles, relying instead on game and accessory sales to cover costs.

“No. It’s more in-line with what you might expect from the current PC market. Obviously, our goal is for it to be a good deal at that level of performance,” he said.

The price of the Steam Machine will reflect its compact size and how quietly it operates – Valve is proud of how silent it is. It also connects easily to TVs with HDMI and CEC, letting users power their TV on and off directly from the Steam Machine. Plus, Valve developed new Bluetooth and wireless technology specifically for it. According to Valve representative Griffais, building all of this into one device was a significant challenge.

He believes the convenience of instantly turning on an entire entertainment system with a single button press – making it feel like a natural part of your living room – is a significant benefit. He added that this seamless experience isn’t currently available with PC gaming setups, and therefore doesn’t have a comparable price.

It’s also important to remember that people’s time is valuable. Some prefer to pay a bit extra for a company like Valve to handle the technical work for them. Designer Lawrence Yang put it this way: “I used to build my own PCs in college, but now I’m just too old and tired to do that anymore! That’s one of the reasons the Steam Machine is appealing to me.”

There’s a lot of debate about how much the Steam Machine will cost. Estimates range widely, from around $400 for a basic version to over $1,000. Some think it might be priced like the PlayStation 5.

According to Niko Partners analyst Daniel Ahmad, Valve is currently facing challenges due to tariffs, rising costs for memory and storage, unpredictable supply chains, and their limited ability to offer subsidies compared to established console makers. However, the device’s specifications indicate Valve aimed for a price point similar to the PlayStation 5.

Valve has officially stated they want the Steam Machine to be reasonably priced and offer good value for the money. However, this is a common claim made by most companies, so it doesn’t really give us any specific details about the actual cost.

The Steam Machine is scheduled to release in 2026, though pre-orders haven’t started and the specific release date is still unconfirmed. You can find a comprehensive overview of what’s known so far at TopMob.
