Valve will stop supporting Windows 10 32-bit systems on Steam in the new year. If you’re still using the 32-bit version of Windows 10, you’ll need to upgrade to the 64-bit version to continue using the platform.
Steam announced on its support page that it will stop supporting Windows 10 32-bit systems starting January 1, 2026. While existing 32-bit games will still work and currently installed Steam clients will function for a while, they won’t receive any further updates – including important security fixes – after next year. This means Steam will no longer provide technical support for those older operating systems.
Perhaps the fact that Windows 10 32-bit support is ending isn’t a concern for most users. Valve reports that it’s currently used on less than 0.01% of systems using Steam. Although the current Steam app works on both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows, future updates will only be compatible with 64-bit versions.
The company advised users to upgrade their operating systems as soon as possible, explaining that essential Steam features aren’t compatible with older 32-bit Windows versions.
With Microsoft ending support for Windows 10, 8.1, and 7 on October 14th, these operating systems will still function, but won’t receive any further updates or security assistance. This is similar to a recent announcement from Steam, and it means users will be at greater risk from online threats.
