As a dedicated gamer on-the-go, I find that portable game consoles need to be robust enough to endure my travels, escapades, and life beyond the office or home. Yet, they’re not often built with the durability to emerge entirely unscathed after a major fire.
Just as your mobile phone experiences its share of falls, spills, and other mishaps, handheld gaming devices like the Nintendo Switch or Steam Deck are no exception. They can suffer from drops, being sat on, and even an accidental dunk in water (we’ve all found ourselves unable to stop playing a captivating game). A reliable case is essential for these instances, although it can’t safeguard against every potential harm.
In other words, it’s highly unlikely for the case and Steam Deck of an average player to have survived a large fire in their studio without any damage at all.
Steam Deck miraculously untouched after huge fire
On the Steam subreddit, user Daniele openly penned a letter to Valve, detailing that a fire had broken out in their entire studio while they were temporarily residing with their girlfriend.
Upon reaching home, they found with dismay that the structure which had housed their accumulated efforts and possessions for years was now a charred wreck, more resembling molten plastic than anything recognizable. Their computer, monitors, television – all were lost.
Most likely, you’re questioning the purpose of my message. Allow me to explain: Nestled among the remnants of a completely melted Blu-ray player, beneath a broken TV, and in front of what once was a portable air conditioner, I found an unexpected item – the Steam Deck, neatly tucked within its case.
Upon opening it, I couldn’t believe my eyes – the console miraculously remained undamaged! Even though firefighters employed water on it and a fire ravaged everything else around, this Steam Deck surprisingly continues to function!
They went ahead and added a picture showing the scene following the fire, as well as their operational Steam Deck that appeared undamaged.

Regrettably, their cherished Steam Controller was destroyed by the fire. It held significant value to them as a collectible item. However, the community of supporters has come together and are trying to find a replacement controller for them without charge.
They went on saying: “Being a devoted fan and regular customer, I felt compelled to share this tale with you and express my gratitude for the exceptional caliber of your products, ranging from the store to the games and hardware. For me, anything bearing the Valve logo symbolizes quality, and now, figuratively speaking, it’s as if it’s fire-resistant!
This demonstrates that the console and its casing, remarkably, seem to have shielded the Steam Deck from both water and fire within just a few hours. It’s intriguing to note that this isn’t the only instance where the console has survived a fire, as players have shared stories of similar remarkable recoveries.
It’s unclear if this supports their argument or not, but there’s no denying that the Steam Deck setup is robust. Still, it’s best not to push its limits in the same manner.
