As a long-time fan of the State of Decay series, I can hardly contain my excitement for the upcoming third installment! Ever since the initial announcement back in 2020, I’ve been eagerly awaiting any news about this game that combines my love for zombie apocalypse survival and open-world exploration.
Back in the year 2013, I was captivated by the initial release of State of Decay. This series has continued to thrive, and after the 2018 sequel, State of Decay 2, a new installment is now being developed for both Xbox and PC platforms.
The main update regarding State of Decay 3 is that it’s moving forward with production, as Undead Labs finishes up work on State of Decay 2 and transitions to the next game. In this post, we’re gathering all the information we have about State of Decay 3.

When will State of Decay 3 release?
As of now, there’s no confirmed launch date for State of Decay 3, which was initially announced in 2020. Surprisingly, Undead Labs and Microsoft have been relatively quiet regarding updates on this upcoming title.
State of Decay 3 trailer
In 2020, the initial trailer for State of Decay 3 was unveiled. This dramatic trailer followed a character as they trailed an animal’s blood trail through the snow, revealing a zombified deer at the end – quite chilling! Another trailer premiered in 2024, showcasing more aspects of the game’s setting, yet it too was just another stunning cinematic preview without any actual gameplay scenes.

State of Decay 3 platforms
Initially, State of Decay and State of Decay 2 were only available on Xbox consoles (and later PC versions as well). It’s expected that the third installment, State of Decay 3, will likely adhere to a similar release pattern. Following the debut of State of Decay 2, Microsoft purchased Undead Labs, which strengthens the assumption that it will maintain its exclusivity on Xbox consoles. Although Microsoft has recently started releasing some of its games on PlayStation, no official confirmation has been made regarding State of Decay 3’s platform availability.
What we know about State of Decay 3
After announcing State of Decay 3 in 2020, there hasn’t been much news from Microsoft and Undead Labs regarding the game. This trend has continued for some time, but a significant update occurred in September 2024 when Undead Labs announced they were wrapping up work on State of Decay 2 to focus their efforts on State of Decay 3 instead.
In our pursuit of creating the best zombie survival simulation game within our series, we are planning to channel our efforts and resources into the development of the next title, State of Decay 3, as stated by Undead Labs.
A lot of people are curious about when State of Decay 3 is going to be released, but Undead Labs hasn’t provided a specific date as of now. They’ve mentioned that we can expect more details at a future time.
The studio expresses their gratitude for your ongoing support and acknowledges that you’re an exceptional gaming community. They are eagerly looking forward to pouring their efforts into crafting the upcoming game to be even more impressive.
2022 saw Kotaku release an exposé highlighting various conflicts within the studio, such as claims of sexism, harassment, and excessive workload. This report suggested that Microsoft’s takeover of Undead Labs was delayed due to problematic workplace culture and unclear leadership. However, Xbox’s Matt Booty stated that Undead Labs has implemented numerous improvements, and they are optimistic about the direction State of Decay 3 is heading in, as it’s one of their most ambitious open-world games currently under development.
