‘Starship Troopers’ Reboot in the Works at Sony, Neill Blomkamp Attached to Direct

Director Neill Blomkamp is taking on a new challenge – he’s set to write and direct a fresh adaptation of Robert A. Heinlein’s “Starship Troopers,” the classic 1959 science fiction novel that was previously adapted into the satirical film “Starship Troopers” in 1997, under the direction of Paul Verhoeven. This upcoming project is being developed by Sony Pictures’ Columbia division.

Although specific storyline particulars are being kept under wraps, it’s been mentioned that the upcoming “Starship Troopers” takes inspiration from Heinlein’s original military narrative, rather than resembling Verhoeven’s adaptation which was a satire on fascism. Neill Blomkamp is both writing and directing this project, with his frequent collaborator Terri Tatchell producing alongside him.

This project signifies a coming together once more for the director and the studio – Sony, who previously brought on Blomkamp for “Gran Turismo.” A movie adaption of the racing video game franchise belonging to Sony’s PlayStation gaming division, it was launched in August 2023. The film generated $120 million globally at box offices, while its production cost amounted to only $60 million.

Neil Blomkamp is best known for his 2009 debut film “District 9,” which uses the story of alien colonization in South Africa as an allegory for immigration. This movie garnered four Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Adapted Screenplay for Blomkamp and his co-writer Terri Tatchell. Subsequently, Blomkamp established his style by producing gritty, thought-provoking sci-fi movies with social themes, such as the action-packed “Elysium” and the unique story of a rapper robot raised by Die Antwoord, titled “Chappie.
