Despite initial plans for a longer run, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will conclude after its second season. While discussions about future seasons took place, the show will now end with just 10 remaining episodes. A concerning detail is that seasons one and two were filmed together, and season two finished production before the cancellation was announced. This raises the possibility that the final episodes might end on a cliffhanger originally meant to secure another season. However, it’s also possible the ending will be conclusive.
Starfleet Academy continues the story begun in Star Trek: Discovery, expanding on the 32nd century setting. While Discovery eventually gained a following, Starfleet Academy hasn’t resonated as strongly with longtime Star Trek fans, even though it includes enjoyable nods to older series like Voyager and Deep Space Nine. Despite this, a second season is already being made, as it was greenlit quickly before the first season even aired. The recent finale offered a glimmer of hope that the show won’t end abruptly or feel incomplete. This hints that the series could ultimately be a fully realized project, rather than one that’s left unfinished.
What ‘Starfleet Academy’ Season 1’s Graduation Flashforward Could Mean for Season 2

The season one finale of Starfleet Academy, “Rubincon,” doesn’t show the cadets actually graduating, but heavily implies it happened. The end credits identify Sandro Rosta and his fellow cadets as the “Class of 3196,” suggesting they completed their training in that year, not just finished their first year. Although the show could have covered each year of Starfleet Academy in a separate season, the finale seems to fast-forward through the last three years by showcasing photos from the cadets’ graduation yearbook.
The season one finale of Starfleet Academy hinted at a graduation, which feels odd if season two is meant to show the cadets’ second year at the Academy. A more likely scenario is that season two will follow the cadets after graduation, perhaps showing them starting their careers in Starfleet. While keeping the whole group together on one ship could be challenging, it’s possible, especially if they’re all still junior officers. This could be similar to a live-action version of Lower Decks set in the 32nd century, though this is just speculation based on that final scene.
Seeing the ‘Starfleet Academy’ Cadets in Active Service Would Be a Cool First for ‘Star Trek’

As a long-time Trek fan, I’ve always wondered what life was really like at Starfleet Academy. We’ve seen glimpses of cadets before, and of course, we know and love so many legendary Starfleet officers, but those worlds have always felt distinctly separate. The 2009 film offered a brief peek, but honestly, it wasn’t enough. What excites me about a dedicated Starfleet Academy project is the chance to finally explore that formative period – to see these characters train and then actually see them in action as officers, and to really get invested in their journey. It’s a part of the Star Trek universe we haven’t truly seen developed before, and I’m eager to see where it goes.
Moving the story forward to the cadets’ time at Starfleet Academy in Season 2 would be a smart move. It would allow us to see how their training pays off when they begin their careers, and it would give the show a more conclusive ending. The first season didn’t leave viewers with a strong sense of closure, so a second season that both resolves existing storylines and feels complete would be much more satisfying. Instead of feeling like a wasted opportunity, the show could be seen as a planned, two-season story.
