‘Starfleet Academy’ Adds ‘Star Trek’ Alums Robert Picardo and Tig Notaro as Series Regulars, Mary Wiseman and Oded Fehr as Guest Stars

As a lifelong Star Trek fan and someone who grew up with the original series and its many spin-offs, I am absolutely thrilled about the latest announcement from “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.” The news that Tig Notaro and Robert Picardo will be reprising their roles as Jett Reno and The Doctor, respectively, is a delightful surprise.

“Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” has added some alumni to its faculty.

As an avid Star Trek fan, I’m thrilled to share that Tig Notaro (Jett Reno) and Robert Picardo (The Doctor) are coming back to the Star Trek universe as series regulars in the latest installment of this iconic franchise! It’s going to be a treat to have them on board once again. Additionally, Mary Wiseman as Sylvia Tilly and Oded Fehr as Admiral Charles Vance will make appearances as guest stars. Can’t wait to see what exciting adventures they bring to the table!

As a passionate cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that some talented newcomers are set to join the stellar cast of this upcoming series. I’m particularly looking forward to Holly Hunter’s portrayal of the captain and chancellor of Starfleet Academy. Among the cadets, we have Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané, and Zoë Steiner. Gina Yashere will recur as a beloved faculty member, adding depth to the storyline. Lastly, Paul Giamatti is set to make an appearance as the inaugural season’s captivating villain. I can hardly wait to see these remarkable actors bring their characters to life on screen!

At San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, executive producers Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau revealed that some beloved characters from the past will be coming back in the “Star Trek” Universe. They shared an emotional video of the new actors – Kerrice Brooks, Bella Shepard, George Hawkins, Karim Diané and Zoë Steiner – who were thrilled after learning they’d been chosen for the show.

In my perspective as a movie reviewer, I’m excited to share that “Starfleet Academy,” set in the 32nd century, makes perfect sense with the return of Notaro, Wiseman, and Fehr reprising their roles from “Discovery,” which recently concluded its five-season run on Paramount+. However, Picardo’s character, who originally appeared on “Voyager” (1995-2001 UPN), presents a fascinating twist. The Doctor, initially introduced as the Federation starships’ emergency medical hologram, evolved into Voyager’s chief physician after being stranded in the far reaches of the galaxy. With seven centuries passing since then, I can only imagine how much The Doctor has grown beyond his initial programming.

Gaia Violo, who penned the show’s first episode, is among its other executive producers. She shares this role with Aaron Baiers, Olatunde Osunsanmi, Jenny Lumet, Rod Roddenberry, Trevor Roth, Frank Siracusa, and John Weber. Filming for the series, set to commence in Toronto in August, is being overseen by CBS Studios in collaboration with Secret Hideout and Roddenberry Entertainment. Paramount Global Content Distribution will handle its distribution.
