The Vortex Horrors were no joke, their energy manipulation skills making them as elusive as a slippery eel in a greased cosmic ocean. But alas, with caution and cunning, they met their doom one by one.
Once you finish the primary story quest “The Promised, Broken” in Starfield Shattered Space, you’re given the opportunity to pick a sub-house to support. Within House Va’ruun, there are three options to aid, each choice granting access to the Scaled Citadel. One of these houses is House Veth’aal, whose base resides within The Keep, which is in Va’ruun’kai.
Upon reaching The Keep, you gain access to converse with both the Ministry of State and the chief of House Veth’aal, Viktor. In a grim declaration, Viktor reveals that his son, Vaeric, has chosen to forfeit his right to House Veth’aal, branding him as a traitor and sentencing him to death. To secure House Veth’aal’s support for the central narrative in Shattered Space, you must locate Vaeric and determine his destiny. Here’s a possible plan of action.
How to locate Vaeric in Starfield
After wrapping up my chat with Viktor, I can make my way to Herald’s Rest – a popular spot in Dazra that was often visited by Vaeric. In this tavern, I need to track down three individuals who might have information about his whereabouts. The first one is Bianca Latif, an old friend of Vaeric’s. She can be found casually leaning against a railing in Herald’s Rest.
Bianca won’t say much about Vaeric, but you can try convincing her to reveal where Vaeric went. In fact, you can attempt to persuade all three characters at Herald’s Rest to share information about Vaeric’s whereabouts with you. If your persuasion efforts fail, the third person you speak to will hint that Vaeric had a friend named Tane who might know his location. It is mentioned that Tane should be showing up at the bar soon.
In about a short while, Tane will climb the stairs leading to Herald’s Rest, and there you have the opportunity to face him. With tattoos covering his face and neck, Tane stands out quite noticeably. Engaging in conversation with Tane reveals that he isn’t part of House Va’ruun, creating a shared understanding between the two of you. After exchanging words for a brief moment, Tane proposes that you can pay him 1,000 Credits to disclose the location of Vaeric. Opting to compensate Tane is by far the most straightforward approach compared to other options.
By paying Tane, it’s clear that he secretly planted a tracker on Vaeric, allowing him to locate Vaeric once the latter made his escape. Tane proposes meeting you beyond the city limits so the two of you can follow Vaeric’s trail. Make your way to Dazra’s western wall, pass through the gate, and the tracking operation will commence.
How to track Vaeric in Starfield
Tane’s navigation device emits sounds that speed up or slow down based on your orientation. If you’re moving towards Vaeric, it will make quick beeps. Conversely, if you veer off course, the beeping becomes slower. You can use this device to locate Vaeric independently, but there’s also a map available for you to follow the precise path the tracker indicates: a guide to help you find your way more efficiently.
Ultimately, the trail guides you towards a Deserted Encampment located northwest of Dazra. It is essential that you explore this encampment for hints about Vaeric’s whereabouts since he is no longer present there. Here are some key areas you should focus on while investigating:
- The tracker laying next to the bed on a crate
- The Vortex Spawn on the ground to the left of the bed
- The footprints directly next to the Vortex Spawn (Bounty Hunter only)
- The bloodstains on a rock to the right of the bed
After gathering all the hints, you and Tane will encounter Foul Vortex Horror foes in Shattered Space – these are fresh adversaries at level 49. They possess the ability to maneuver energy for teleportation, so watch your steps around them. The Vortex Horrors boast potent melee attacks and move swiftly and aggressively. You’ll have to vanquish a total of three Vortex Horrors before moving forward with the mission.
Once all the Vortex Monstrosities have been handled, chat with Tane about your findings from the camp. This will set you on a path to follow Vaeric’s old tracks, starting at the base of the camp. Keep following your guideposts until you get to a farmstead. Engage the resident NPC there and convince them that Vaeric passed through their place. Be mindful of your words when speaking with them to ensure Viktor stays contented.
The NPC will reluctantly say that an injured person came through there a week ago and they patched him up and sent him on his way. You’ll be given a general direction as to which way Vaeric went, which gives you another quest marker to follow. At the end of the quest marker, you’ll stumble upon a farmhouse, which you can enter and investigate. Here are the clues you need to find in the house:
- Vaeric’s Log – Entry 1 is sitting on a table in front of a couch on the top floor of the house
- Vaeric’s Computer is located in the back room of the house
After uncovering these hints, make your way back outside to share your findings with Tane. But before you can do so, Vaeric, who resides on the farm and tends to some livestock, will interrupt you.
Deciding Vaeric’s fate in Starfield
In your chat with Vaeric, you have two options: either hear his perspective or respond adversely towards him. If you wish to eliminate Vaeric immediately by implying his father desires his death, opt for dialogue choices that convey this sentiment. However, it’s beneficial to give Vaeric a chance to speak, as there exists a peaceful outcome where both parties are content and satisfied with the resolution.
If you listen to Vaeric, you’ll discover that he preferred not to engage in his father’s political affairs. Instead, he yearned for the freedom to map out his life independently. He carries a heavy sense of responsibility for what he has subjected his father to, yet he is reluctant to assume the role as heir of House Veth’aal.
At the end of the dialogue, if you heard him out, you’re left with three choices:
- Persuade Vaeric to return home
- Tell him he’s free to go, but you need his Signet Ring as proof of death for Viktor. You can also demand 10,000 Credits in addition to the ring with this option.
- Attack him and take his Signet Ring as proof of death
It would be advantageous for everyone if Vaeric were allowed to continue living and his Signet Ring was taken for Viktor. Convincing him to return home is another viable solution, though it necessitates passing a persuasion test. Attacking him serves little purpose unless you’re playing a character who engages in such behavior in the Starfield universe.
Ultimately, you will be back with either Viktor and his Signet Ring, or with Vaeric. In return, you’ll receive the essential power grid codes needed for the primary plot in Shattered Space, allowing you to keep assisting the House Va’ruun factions.
