Stardew Valley Expanded creator works on a new project. Ambitious Castle Village is expected to surpass its predecessor

Beyond what Stardew Valley enthusiasts eagerly anticipate in Baldur’s Village, the creator of a significant mod for Eric “ConcernedApe” Barone’s game is currently engaged in a larger, more challenging undertaking.

FlashShifter, a well-known modder, garnered significant recognition amongst enthusiasts of the farming life simulator. Primarily due to the Stardew Valley Expanded mod, which, as its name indicates, substantially enlarges the scope of this game.

The goal of this project was to evoke a sense of nostalgia: the creator intended for former SV players to experience a return to the beginning of the original game. This sentiment was further strengthened by the recent updates the mod has been receiving in the past couple of years.

The achievement of the project is clearly demonstrated not just by the massive appeal of Stardew Valley Expanded on Nexus Mods, where more than 3 million individual users have downloaded the modification. In addition, FlashShifter played a significant role in the major 1.6 update of the original game itself.

Not 2.0, but 2 projects by the creators of Stardew Valley Expanded

Despite holding an official job, the modder didn’t stop there in their career. In fact, they aim to outdo their best work yet with “Castle Village.”

Or:

Although the modder had a formal employment, it didn’t mark the end of their career. Instead, they plan to surpass their most impressive creation with “Castle Village.

Originally planned for inclusion in the 2.0 update of SV Expanded (which was initially announced and then delayed), the project has since been decided to be released as a standalone mod instead, called “the castle” part. Consequently, the new features from version 2.0 were eventually rolled out in SVE with patch 1.15, which went live in October 2024.

According to FlashShifter’s interview with Nexus Mods, Castle Village stands out as a more expansive endeavor compared to SVE. This upcoming creation will introduce a novel city featuring distinct architecture, numerous Non-Player Characters (NPCs), magical items, and dungeons reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda series, complete with bosses. To enhance the unique ambiance of Castle Village, it will also feature an original soundtrack. Given its distinctive style that sets it apart from both Stardew Valley and SVE, this content has been separated from Stardew Valley Expanded 2.0 (or 1.15).

Haunted Chocolatier without mods from creator of SVE

As for the release date, Castle Village is still under wraps. The developers have only confirmed that it will upgrade Stardew Valley Expanded to version 2.0, but these updates primarily focus on enhancing the game’s internal systems (as mentioned by FlashShifter on Reddit).

Developing SV required a considerable amount of effort from one creator, along with a backup developer for the main game. Yet, FlashShifter doesn’t seem to regret the time invested in creating SV, whether through mods or officially. In an interview, he stated that working on his favorite game was “the most precious life experience” for him (not to forget that the modder was going through a tough time and needed employment at the time).

The American didn’t overlook thanking other “Stardew Valley” enthusiasts for their backing of his projects, including Eric Barone. He also made it clear that at this time, he doesn’t have plans to develop modifications for Eric Barone’s upcoming game, Haunted Chocolatier. Instead, he’s focusing on his work for the developer and on “Castle Village”.
