It’s announced that Stormgate is undergoing a significant update following the positive response to a recent free-to-play RTS title developed by StarCraft veterans. The developers plan to revise the most contentious aspect of the game.
While Frost Giant Studio’s debut game has received player support, it’s challenging to label it a resounding success initially. However, the team swiftly responded by collaborating with fans on enhancements for their game – that’s what early access is all about! Consequently, significant updates have been rolled out, including version 0.3, which dropped at the end of February. Further improvements, or hotfixes, were subsequently released.
To this point, their attempts don’t seem to be producing the desired outcomes, as indicated by the Steam reviews that lean more towards unfavorable rather than overwhelmingly positive. In fact, just under half of the total feedback for the game Stormgate is positive (approximately 48%), with over 7,000 ratings in total.
As a gamer, I’ve noticed that the player count for Stormgate hasn’t been too high lately. To be honest, I rarely see more than three digits when logging in, and often there are less than 5,000 players at once. For a strategy game, especially one that’s free to play, this number isn’t all that impressive.
Campaign for renovation
By checking out the feedback on Steam, you’ll encounter numerous views expressing that Stormgate could have developed into a fairly good game. Yet, even in favorable reviews, criticisms surface regarding the unfinished campaign, aesthetic aspects, and incorporated microtransactions can be found.
Previously, the developers had dealt with the second concern, leading to numerous graphic enhancements like updated unit models. However, during the “Find Your Next Game” event on April 11th, they also tackled the initial issue. At this showcase, the Frost Giant team revealed a revamped story campaign for Stormgate, which underwent a complete overhaul due to player feedback and the developers’ vision.
Audience praised numerous enhancements demonstrated in the developer’s video, ranging from the significantly enhanced and more film-like style to the noticeably intriguing mission goals.
Due to recent updates, the game now aligns more closely with player expectations prior to its launch, and it’s been described as “a thousand times improved” compared to the original version, according to comments on YouTube. The one aspect that fell short was the absence of cutscenes. Nevertheless, many players might be understanding if the developers chose to limit these, especially if they were to resemble the poor quality cutscenes seen in the game’s initial release version.
The upcoming “Stormgate” campaign is scheduled to be included in the 0.4 update, but its exact release date has yet to be determined.
