Star Wars: Starfighter Breaks Tradition by Having No Legacy Characters

The new Star Wars movie, starring Ryan Gosling, is doing something unusual. According to the writer, the film will introduce entirely new characters and won’t include any of the familiar faces from previous Star Wars films. If this is accurate, it would be the first Star Wars movie to do so.

The original Star Wars sequels (The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi) reunited the cast of the first film, and both the prequel and sequel trilogies brought back several actors from earlier movies. This also happened with Solo, which even included appearances by Princess Leia, Grand Moff Tarkin, and Darth Vader.

According to Jonathan Tropper, the writer of Star Wars: Starfighter, the new film will feature some familiar elements, but won’t include any returning characters from previous installments. He explained that:

Lightsabers are definitely a key element of the Star Wars universe. I’m being very careful not to give away any spoilers, but it’s generally understood that this story doesn’t feature any characters from the previous films. You won’t see familiar faces from the other movies. We’re including some classic Star Wars elements, but beyond that, I can’t say much more.

A new movie is coming out later this year, and it’s currently unknown if it will include characters we’ve seen in earlier films. Since The Mandalorian previously brought back Luke Skywalker, it’s possible we might see other familiar Star Wars heroes in this new movie as well.

Even if the new movie doesn’t follow the events of The Mandalorian series, it will still feature familiar Star Wars characters. This differs from Star Wars: Starfighter, which appears to introduce a completely original cast of characters, while the new movie will focus on established heroes like Din Djarin and Grogu.

Star Wars: Starfighter Won’t Feature Legacy Star Wars Character

I was really excited to hear Tropper share some details! Apparently, this new movie is set five years after The Rise of Skywalker, which makes it the furthest point in the Star Wars timeline we’ve ever seen on screen. It’s cool to think about what’s been happening in that galaxy far, far away after the events of the sequel trilogy.

The title Star Wars: Starfighter hints the movie will center around a fighter pilot, potentially played by Ryan Gosling, though this isn’t official yet. It’s unclear if this pilot will be connected to the Resistance or any other group in the Star Wars universe. However, director Shawn Levy has stated that Starfighter will be a self-contained story, separate from the ongoing saga.

I’ve been hearing a lot of buzz about the story, and honestly, it’s a bit of a mystery! The director, Levy, has said it’s not going to be a prequel explaining what happened before, and it’s definitely not a sequel continuing the existing story. He’s really emphasizing that this is going to be a completely fresh adventure, something new and separate.

Ryan Gosling described the script as exceptionally well-written during Star Wars Celebration, praising its compelling story and unique characters. He emphasized the script’s emotional depth and exciting adventure, and stated that Shawn is the ideal director to bring this story to life.

Levy is the director of Star Wars: Starfighter, based on a script by Tropper. The movie features performances by Gosling, Flynn Gray, Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams.
