Prepare, Star Wars enthusiasts (the devoted ones remaining), as you may soon encounter numerous speculations surrounding the potential Rey film. Rest assured, we’re about to share some authentic insights with you.
It appears that Lucasfilm has temporarily paused work on the upcoming Star Wars movie featuring Rey as Skywalker, according to several sources within the industry. Although it hasn’t been completely scrapped, the project, initially hyped as a significant cinematic continuation of the Star Wars storyline, is now being given less attention due to internal changes and adjustments in the franchise’s strategic focus.
The movie, provisionally named “Star Wars: New Jedi Order“, was planned to feature Daisy Ridley reprising her role as Rey, with the revival of the Jedi Order being fifteen years post-“The Rise of Skywalker”. This film was slated to be helmed by Academy Award-winning documentarian Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. Over time, various screenwriters were attached to it, including Damon Lindelof, Steven Knight, and most recently, George Nolfi, who directed “The Banker“.

Based on information from entertainment insider Daniel Richtman, the film is temporarily paused as Lucasfilm concentrates on various projects they’re working on concurrently. Among these are “The Mandalorian & Grogu”, which is currently being produced and set to debut on May 22, 2026, and director Shawn Levy’s “Star Wars: Starfighter”, which has reportedly enlisted Ryan Gosling and aims for a 2027 premiere.
As a movie enthusiast, I’ve got to clarify something about the upcoming project that’s been circling the news. While some industry voices have referred to it as “on hold,” journalist Jeff Sneider has challenged this notion. He explained that Lucasfilm doesn’t yet have a completed script for the project. So, it’s not exactly on hold; instead, they’re actively writing it and are simply waiting for the final draft. This indicates that the project is still in the development phase rather than being put on ice, but production is definitely not imminent.
It’s worth mentioning that as of now, Rey was initially planned for a 2025 release… but instead, the script is currently stuck in development.
Presently, Lucasfilm is aiming to debut the Rey movie in 2025, with Dave Filoni’s film scheduled for release a year after that.

The basis for the ambiguity lies in Lucasfilm’s adaptable approach towards movie releases. Under Kathleen Kennedy’s guidance, the studio seems to be focusing on distributing major theatrical releases at a slower pace, allowing more time between projects. Given Disney’s need to rejuvenate Star Wars on the big screen following a six-year hiatus from cinemas, they seem to be concentrating on well-established ideas and iconic characters such as The Mandalorian and Grogu for their upcoming projects.
It’s also being speculated that a proposed new trilogy led by Simon Kinberg could impact how and when Rey’s storyline progresses. Insiders indicate that instead of having her own standalone film, Rey might become a central character in several interconnected movies, potentially pushing back the timeline for the New Jedi Order as initially planned.

The challenging past of this project’s growth has undoubtedly led to its delays as well. Initially, Damon Lindelof chose to step away, stating creative disagreements. Subsequently, Steven Knight (known for Peaky Blinders) came on board, but he too parted ways, allegedly due to unhappiness with the project’s direction. George Nolfi was later involved, yet details about his advancement remain scarce.
For enthusiasts of Rey and the epoch of the sequel trilogy, the news may be disheartening. Daisy Ridley’s comeback was grandly announced at the 2023 Star Wars Celebration, and the movie was anticipated to guide the series towards its next phase following the Skywalker Saga.
At present, it seems Lucasfilm is choosing to pause the Jedi Order, though temporarily. The possibility of New Jedi Order coming to fruition is contingent on the completion of a script, the success of upcoming Star Wars films, and the overall strategy to rejuvenate the brand in cinemas. To provide some clarity about the situation at Lucasfilm, I’d like to share an additional insight: For now, the development of New Jedi Order is on hold, as the company focuses on other projects aimed at revitalizing the Star Wars universe on the big screen.

Before the recent reported break, there was no announced release date for the movie, and the script was still being worked on. Given that Kathleen Kennedy is likely to step down from Lucasfilm, it’s now up to the new Star Wars boss to decide the future of Rey’s character.
