‘Star Wars’ Movie With Daisy Ridley Loses Screenwriter Steven Knight

As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for following the ever-evolving saga that is Star Wars, I must say I find myself intrigued by the latest developments. The departure of Steven Knight from the project to explore Rey’s journey post-Rise of Skywalker adds an interesting twist to the narrative.

It seems there’s a new change on the “Star Wars” production. Screenwriter Steven Knight has decided to leave the film set, and instead, he will be focusing on Daisy Ridley’s Rey character, following her storyline post-2019’s “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker.

In March of 2023, EbMaster broke the exclusive news that Knight joined the project, stepping in for original screenwriters Damon Lindelof and Justin Britt-Gibson. Currently, Lucasfilm is discussing with prospective writers to work on the storyline, which revolves around Rey’s mission to establish a new Jedi Academy. However, this delay suggests that production may not commence before 2025 at the earliest.

Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy continues to be involved in directing her first feature film; prior to this, she directed episodes for the Disney+ series “Ms. Marvel,” having won the Oscar for Best Documentary Short Film twice. In a recent interview with EbMaster about her latest documentary on designer Diane von Furstenberg (premiered on Hulu in June), Obaid-Chinoy expressed her fascination with Rey’s journey as a female Jedi in the “Star Wars” saga, stating that this is where she can most effectively apply her personal experiences.

Simultaneously, Knight has been a dynamic creative figure in both film and television. He is penning the screenplay for the upcoming Maria Callas biopic “Maria” alongside Angelina Jolie, and collaborating on a movie adaptation of his hit BBC series “Peaky Blinders” with Cillian Murphy. Additionally, he has developed shows for FX (“The Veil”), Disney+ (“A Thousand Blows”), and the BBC (“This Town”).

The upcoming “Star Wars” movie titled “The Mandalorian and Grogu,” directed by Jon Favreau, is set to debut in May 2026. Disney has planned two additional “Star Wars” films for December 2026 and December 2027, although the titles have not been disclosed yet. At the 2023 Star Wars Celebration held in London, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed that, apart from Obaid-Chinoy’s project, they are also working on movies with director James Mangold (“Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny”) and Dave Filoni, who is the chief creative officer at Lucasfilm and executive producer for the Disney+ series “Ahsoka” and “The Mandalorian.

Puck News first reported Knight’s departure.
