Over time, video games linked to the “Star Wars” series have shown a mix of quality, with both successful and less successful titles, including those best left unmentioned. They all had their moment to excel, while some other projects never made it past development stages due to cancellation. One such game was Star Wars 1313, but today we’ll revisit another canceled project that planned to let us play as Darth Maul himself.
Darth Maul from Texas
Red Fly Studio is an American development group based in Texas, who granted Wii owners the chance to play Ghostbusters: The Video Game and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fans – Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows. Their impressive portfolio also includes Star Wars: The Force Unleashed II for the Nintendo platform. Consequently, when LucasArts started pondering over a separate game from the Star Wars universe for Nintendo’s console giant from Kyoto, they naturally chose this team.
Texans were granted extensive autonomy when it came to designing their game, with only a tentative title, “Battle of the Sith Lords,” proposed by George Lucas and his team. The studio initiated their project in October 2010 and soon realized that Darth Maul would serve as the central figure.
Darth Maul like Batman
For now, let’s temporarily set aside any concerns about plot inconsistencies and focus on the gameplay of Battle of the Sith Lords. The creators intended this game to resemble the Batman: Arkham series, emphasizing stealth action and instilling fear in opponents. Maul was designed to operate from the shadows, terrifying his adversaries so much that they’d make blunders like stumbling into lasers or fighting among themselves.
In a similar vein to the Batman series crafted by Rocksteady Studios, our game also draws significant influences. This is evident in our combat system that emphasizes agility, keen awareness, and proficiency in dodging and countering enemy attacks. Of course, on the battlefield, we’ll be wielding lightsabers, and the encounters will be intense; dismemberment and decapitation are frequent occurrences.
Incorporating adult-oriented bed scenes was intended to classify “Battle of the Sith Lords” as an adult-aimed game.
Almost like Mass Effect
It’s worth noting that the developers didn’t just draw inspiration from one source. Alongside their original ideas, they were also inspired by the Mass Effect series. Red Fly Studio intended to incorporate elements like companions and a command center, borrowing these concepts from the popular game series.
Initially, Darth Talon, set to be the second playable character, and a helpful droid handling menus and scanning surroundings would make the list. Between missions, we’d find ourselves on an asteroid’s surface, where our temporary base camp resides. The adventures were intended to guide us towards specific spaceports or jungle-covered planets.
Of course, the collection of features inspired by Mass Effect wouldn’t feel whole without a comparable mechanism for engaging in dialogues with autonomous characters as well.
Narrative chaos
When I brought up Darth Talon, it likely sparked recognition among Star Wars enthusiasts since she emerged 170 years after Maul. Over the ensuing months, however, the creators opted to deviate from their initial plan of featuring Darth Maul prominently. Consequently, they chose not to depict Maul’s history starting from his teenage years, culminating in his defeat in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace, and moving on to the events in The Clone Wars.
Instead, there was an agreement reached with Lucas that our character would represent a descendant of Darth Maul, maintaining a striking resemblance to his ancestor. Originally, the developers had envisioned a distinct appearance for this “new Maul,” but the publisher requested consistency with the original character design. The primary antagonist was initially intended to be Darth Krayt, but he was later replaced by Darth Maul’s lineage.
Shaping up
Initially, not every aspect of the “Battle of the Sith Lords” venture clicked smoothly, but the team gradually pieced things together, giving it form. Unfortunately, that’s when the dialogue between Red Fly Studio and Lucas Arts began to falter, and eventually, by the close of June 2011, the publisher communicated to the developers that their project had been terminated. Although it wasn’t explicitly stated, it seems likely that the cancellation was due to Lucasfilm’s transition under Disney’s management.
Fight for life
Instead of surrendering, the innovators persistently sought dialogue with Electronic Arts and Disney, hoping to carry on with the project. Regrettably, neither company expressed interest, despite the team’s readiness to tailor the project to their specifications. An effort was even made to revive the entire project using Unreal Engine 4, but that attempt too proved unsuccessful.
It appears that the battle depicted in “Battle of the Sith Lords” concluded with the termination of the project. Perhaps one day a narrative centered around Maul will be created, mirroring the style of the “Batman: Arkham” trilogy.
While we’re feeling a bit low, let’s brighten our mood by checking out a brief gameplay video, complete with insightful commentary from the experts at Game Informer magazine.
