When will Fate of the Old Republic be released?

There’s no confirmed release date for Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. Many believe the game is still quite a ways off, as the development studio, Arcanaut, was only recently founded in July 2025. The studio’s founder previously ran Humanoid Origin, which operated from May 2021 to December 2024 without ever launching a game.

With rumors circulating that the release of Fate of the Old Republic might be delayed until 2030, Hudson reassured fans that this wouldn’t happen. He stated online, “Ignore the rumors about a 2030 release – the game will come out sooner!” He jokingly added that he wasn’t getting any younger, implying a desire to see the game released in a more timely manner.

Who is making Fate of the Old Republic?

Arcanaut Studios, with locations in Edmonton and Kelowna, British Columbia, is currently developing Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic. The studio focuses on crafting engaging and interactive stories, and prioritizes a supportive and positive work environment for its creative team.

The studio aims to explore new possibilities and isn’t afraid to take risks, even if it means things don’t always work out.

“We are doers. We’re not passengers. We are drivers,” the developer’s website says.

At Arcanaut, Hudson leads the company as both CEO and game director. He’s supported by a management team including Chris Bain (CFO), Cordy Rierson (COO), and Ryan Hoyle (CTO). The team is made up of experienced developers who previously worked at major companies like Microsoft, Epic, Remedy, The Coalition, and ZeniMax.

Arcanut is a brand new studio, having launched in July 2025, and the game is currently in the early stages of development. They’re working closely with Lucasfilm, the owners of the Star Wars franchise, on this project.

Fate of the Old Republic story, setting, and characters

Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic is a single-player action role-playing game with a strong focus on story, and it’s considered the spiritual successor to BioWare’s classic Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. While specific story and character details are still limited, the developers at Arcanaut aim to create a large-scale, interactive adventure set in a galaxy undergoing a period of change, where your choices will significantly impact your journey towards the light or dark side.

Okay, so I’m going to be playing as someone who can use the Force, and the game is set in a galaxy that’s kinda rebuilding itself after something big. What’s cool is that every choice I make is supposed to really affect my path – like, whether I lean towards being a hero or fall into the dark side. It sounds like my decisions actually matter and shape the story!

According to Hudson, Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic will feature a brand new story, building on everything the team has learned from previous projects. The game will focus on player choices, the idea of fate, and the classic battle between good and evil. He also expressed excitement about working with Lucasfilm Games again.

Jay Ong, who leads Disney Games, said that the team’s plans for Star Wars: Fate of the Old Republic are the ambitious and high-quality experience Disney aims to provide for its fans.

Speaking with StarWars.com, Hudson explained that the upcoming game aims to create a modern, definitive Star Wars experience. It will use the latest technology and game design techniques, along with a brand-new story, to give players the freedom and immersive feeling that made the original KOTOR so beloved.

Hudson’s history

Casey Hudson is a long-time figure in the gaming industry. He began his career at BioWare in 1998, spending over 16 years with the company. He’s particularly famous for leading the development of popular games like Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2003) and the original Mass Effect (2007), as well as its sequels, Mass Effect 2 and 3. After a brief period at Xbox working on mixed reality projects in 2015, he returned to BioWare. There, he contributed to Anthem and the Mass Effect: Legendary Edition before leaving again in 2021 to found a new game studio, Humanoid Origin. The studio aimed to create a large-scale sci-fi game, but unfortunately closed in November 2024 due to unexpected funding issues.

One of many Star Wars games

It used to be that only Electronic Arts could make Star Wars games for consoles and PCs. Now, Disney and Lucasfilm are working with many different game developers on a range of new projects. Besides the already known Fate of the Old Republic, exciting upcoming games include a rebuilt version of Knights of the Old Republic, Star Wars Eclipse, Star Wars: Zero Company, and a new title led by Amy Henning, who previously worked on the Uncharted series, and several others.
