Star Wars fans are already worried about Simon Kinberg’s new Trilogy and they’ve got a point

As a seasoned gamer and Star Wars enthusiast who grew up watching the original trilogy on VHS tapes, I can’t help but feel a sense of both excitement and skepticism about Simon Kinberg working on a new Star Wars trilogy.

As a hardcore Star Wars fan, I’m all over it! Seems like Simon Kinberg’s cooking up a new Star Wars trilogy, and if you haven’t been dodging Imperial patrols in the Outer Rim, you’ve probably heard about it.

As reported by Variety, Simon Kinberg, renowned for his work on the X-Men films, is set to script and co-produce three science fiction movies in a distant galaxy, alongside Star Wars veteran Kathleen Kennedy. Unconfirmed rumors suggest that these upcoming Star Wars films could be Episodes 10-12, furthering the Skywalker Saga.

Initially, you might assume that this news would spark much enthusiasm online, but surprisingly, the response has been more subdued than a Jedi who’s sworn to keep silence. So why is there little excitement?

Empty Promises

A significant concern among fans is their skepticism about whether this upcoming trilogy will actually materialize.

A brief glance at the Star Wars subreddit shows numerous comments like this one: “I’m eagerly anticipating a long silence about this project, lasting for about two years, until we receive the major update that Kinberg has departed from and LucasFilm is looking for a new screenwriter for!

As a devoted Star Wars enthusiast, I can’t help but feel a sense of disappointment and frustration. It seems like Disney has promised us much, only to fall short on delivery, leaving the fandom a bit disheartened.

Didn’t Patty Jenkins’ hiring as director for a Rogue Squadron film turn out to be an unfulfilled promise, though? And what became of Rian Johnson’s planned trilogy or the much-anticipated standalone Rey movie?

Indeed, ever since Disney acquired Star Wars, they’ve made several announcements about three new trilogies and a total of eight movies. However, none of these projects have been realized so far. It’s no surprise that fans might be losing interest in Star Wars when they consistently hear about exciting developments but don’t see them come to fruition.

Not the guy

Additionally, let’s clarify that this is not intended as a personal criticism. However, it seems that Simon Kinberg doesn’t evoke much enthusiasm among moviegoers (to underscore this, I should mention that my editor questioned whether he was worthy of being featured prominently in the headline).

His writing style is varied, to put it mildly, and he’s been involved in several poorly-received superhero films such as X-Men: The Last Stand and Fant4stic. However, it should be noted that he has also penned some highly acclaimed movies, like Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes and Days of Future Past. Nevertheless, it appears his successes are outnumbered by his misses.

As a devoted admirer, I can’t deny Simon Kinberg’s undeniable talent as a producer; his resume speaks volumes. However, let’s be honest, the average fan doesn’t get all that excited about production credits, do they? That’s particularly true when one looks at his writing work, which, to be frank, hasn’t always been up to par.

It’s understandable that Rian Johnson was a contentious pick when his Star Wars trilogy was unveiled, given the polarizing nature of “The Last Jedi.” However, I must admit, it did manage to stir up some excitement.

Hearing that Kinberg’s creating a trilogy feels somewhat similar to finding out you’ll be eating fries for dinner. You won’t grumble about it, but I doubt you’d post excitedly about it on social media either, would you?

Sky-bore-ker Saga

Ultimately, it seems like we’re repeating ourselves in an attempt to make Disney understand, but here it goes again: The Skywalker saga feels rather uneventful.

Indeed, it’s not unbiased to say that the Skywalker saga has run its course. The Skywalker family, encompassing Anakin, Luke, and Leia, holds significant weight in the Star Wars universe. They’ve captivated us, brought balance to the Force, and safeguarded the galaxy. However, it’s high time we shifted our focus elsewhere. As Kylo Ren once put it, “Let the past die.” If necessary, let it go completely.

Refraining from venturing beyond the Skywalker saga seems to stagnate the Star Wars franchise. This recurring focus suggests a lack of confidence in the broader universe’s potential, thereby confining audience expectations about what a Star Wars film could encompass.

Indeed, we’re aiming for the classic elements such as lightsabers, Sith, and Jedi that we adore, yet we yearn for innovative concepts. It seems that despite the amusement Star Wars fans have shown with the line “Palpatine somehow returned,” the message of needing fresh ideas hasn’t quite sunk in at Disney headquarters, as if Mickey himself were oblivious to it.

Dear Mr. Disney (should you be reading this), here are the three factors that seem to be dampening the excitement for your upcoming trilogy.

It seems unlikely that this will occur; Kinberg doesn’t possess the innovative mindset required to spearhead such a project. To add to the disappointment, it appears that interest has waned.

Fortunately, there’s a chance left. Given these lowered expectations, it’s your moment to show courage and daring, aiming to captivate us once more with the magic of Star Wars!
