‘Star Wars’ Darth Maul Animated Series Coming to Disney+ Next Year, With Sam Witwer Voicing Villain

2026 will see the debut of a fresh “Star Wars” animated series centered around Darth Maul on Disney+, with Sam Witwer reprising his role as the famous antagonist by lending his voice once more.

At this year’s Tokyo Star Wars Celebration on Friday, news about the new series titled “Maul — Shadow Lord” was officially unveiled. Previously, Witwer has lent his voice to Maul on multiple occasions, including in animated shows like “Star Wars: The Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels,” as well as in the 2018 film “Solo: A Star Wars Story.

During a special panel highlighting two decades of Lucasfilm Animation, Dave Filoni, Chief Creative Officer at Lucasfilm, and Athena Portillo, Vice President of animation, unveiled an unexpected sneak peek of their upcoming show. The final scene of the video commemorating the anniversary seemed to be a preview from the forthcoming Maul series, sending the audience into a frenzy.

Following the unveiling, Portillo shared during a subsequent discussion that viewers will discover a great deal about Maul in the upcoming series. Regrettably, she couldn’t reveal much more, but she did mention that Sam Witwer’s participation in the show has been exceptional. She expressed her enthusiasm for his ability to read the scripts and contribute insights throughout the process. Dave Filoni and Sam initially developed the character for animation, so it’s crucial to consider Sam’s thoughts for the character’s complexity as well.

Witwer shared that the story unfolds approximately one year following the Clone Wars, implying he’s taking some time to recover from the events where Ahsoka apparently showed him the door.
