Attention! This post includes SPOILERS for the first three episodes of Andor season 2. The series recently disclosed that the initial Death Star was delayed in completion, implying catastrophe for the Star Wars galaxy had it been operational on schedule. Set before Rogue One and A New Hope, Andor has been exploring the genuine genesis of the Rebel Alliance and the immense efforts required to unite diverse cells into a formidable resistance. Simultaneously, it’s depicted how the Empire was intensifying its control over the galaxy, notably by constructing their most powerful and secretive weapon.
In the initial three episodes of Andor’s second season, the story unfolds four years prior to the Battle of Yavin and the destruction of the Death Star as depicted in A New Hope. Here, Ben Mendelsohn’s character, Director Krennic, orchestrates a clandestine gathering of select Imperial officials for a meeting with the Emperor’s agenda – the Empire aiming for self-reliant, boundless power. In reality, the hunt for new energy resources serves Krennic’s Project Stardust, and Krennic himself hints that the Star Wars galaxy would have been significantly altered had he managed to keep the Death Star construction on schedule.
The Death Star Was Supposed To Have Been Ready Long Before A New Hope
The Death Star Wars Up To A Year Overdue
At the Maltheen Divide, I find myself at a clandestine meeting with Krennic, discussing the Empire’s strategy to gain control of the abundant kalkite deposits on Ghorman. The concern lies in the potential disruption of the planet’s core due to Imperial mining activities, which will endanger the 800,000 inhabitants and provoke resistance against our attempts to relocate or destroy their homeworld. Moreover, I have learned that this kalkite is crucial for Krennic’s project, as it serves to coat the Death Star’s reactor lenses.
During his presentation, Krennic admitted that he had guaranteed completion of the project within three years. Given that Andor season 2 takes place in 4 BBY, we can now deduce that the Death Star was approximately one year late. Although it was previously understood that Krennic experienced numerous delays and difficulties, this is the first instance where we learn the exact extent to which the project was behind schedule, as well as how close it could have been to completion had Stardust not encountered complications.
Imagine If The Empire Had The Death Star A Year Before A New Hope
The Rebel Alliance Wasn’t Truly Unified Until Rogue One…
From a movie buff’s perspective, visualizing the galaxy’s fate if the Death Star had been finished on Krennic’s initial timeline is quite chilling. A year earlier, it could have meant certain doom for the Rebellion, still in its infancy and struggling to coordinate effectively until the events unfolded in Rogue One and the Battle of Scarif, right before A New Hope. It’s safe to assume that at that point, none within the Rebellion would have been aware of the project, so there would have been no attempt to acquire the plans.
If the Death Star had been completed a year earlier as initially planned by Krennic, it’s possible that all opposition to the Empire would have perished, leaving us wondering if Luke Skywalker would have ever joined the Rebellion or even existed. As we know from ‘A New Hope’, it was Luke who ultimately destroyed the battle station, an act largely influenced by his connection to the Force. Altering this event in the Star Wars timeline could result in a myriad of outcomes, none of which would be favorable.
Krennic’s Failure Sealed The Empire’s Fate
“Delays and Setbacks”
I’m grateful that Director Krennic didn’t manage to complete the operational battle station on schedule, as it provided a crucial year for the Rebellion to strengthen and for Luke Skywalker’s hope to flourish in the galaxy. It seems that Director Krennic experienced numerous “hiccups” and obstacles along the way, as hinted at in the first episode of Andor season 2.
A significant hurdle occurred prior to the Empire, when workers from Geonosis, who were constructing the Death Star during its initial stages, deliberately destroyed their work upon Poggle the Lesser’s instructions. This act of sabotage erased three months of progress and allowed Poggle to rejoin the Separatists before Revenge of the Sith. Since Krennic had arranged the deal with the Geonosians, this betrayal severely damaged his standing. However, it’s truly astonishing that Orson Krennic remained so resolute in completing his project…yet ultimately saw his efforts appropriated by Grand Moff Tarkin in Rogue One.
