2017’s Star Wars Battlefront II, developed by Battlefield creators DICE, has seen a surge in popularity recently on Steam, approaching all-time high player numbers. This resurgence is taking place as fans rally for Electronic Arts (EA) to produce another installment in the highly successful and financially lucrative Star Wars franchise.
In the last 24 hours, the game had approximately 9,292 simultaneous users on Steam, slightly less than its highest all-time record of 10,489 players, based on data from SteamDB. Prior to mid-April 2025, the game typically had between 1,500 and 3,000 peak concurrent players. However, since then, there’s been a significant increase in player numbers for this eight-year-old title.
During this period, it so happened that the second and last season of the Star Wars TV series Andor premiered on Disney+.
It’s unclear what specifically is causing the surge in popularity, but this rise occurs during a promotional push for the third installment of the new series. Recently, Muhannad Ben Amor from Andor expressed his desire on Instagram by saying, “Star Wars needs to release Battlefront 3 as soon as possible.
Lately, there’s been a lot of buzz and interaction on the Battlefront subreddit, as players share their excitement about coming back to the game. Since Battlefront II is part of EA Play, this means that Game Pass Ultimate members can access it too as part of their subscription package.
2015’s Battlefront and 2017’s Battlefront II, together, surpassed sales of over 33 million units. Yet, Electronic Arts (EA) has not announced any plans for further installments in the series. In 2024, it was disclosed that EA turned down a proposal from DICE for Battlefront III because of the high licensing fees they would have to pay Disney. The report suggested that a potential Battlefront III would need to sell approximately 20% more copies than its predecessors to cover its production costs.
As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got some insider info. Right now, the folks over at DICE are all hands on deck with Battlefield 6. So, if you’re hoping for a new Battlefront game anytime soon, well… let’s just say don’t hold your breath, okay? But remember, in this unpredictable world of gaming, anything could happen!
The Battlefront series first appeared in 2004, with a third-person shooter produced by the now-defunct Pandemic Studios. A follow-up, titled Battlefront II, also emerged in 2005, and was developed under the same studio. It was rumored that work on a third game was underway, but it allegedly fell through just shy of completion.
In 2024, the two classic Star Wars: Battlefront games were bundled as the Star Wars: Battlefront Timeless Edition, but it received poor reviews from critics because of various bugs and problems that were present.
