Several promising ideas for a new Star Trek movie have been explored with well-known directors like Quentin Tarantino, S.J. Clarkson, Noah Hawley, and Matt Shakman. Unfortunately, none of those projects moved forward. Following the recent merger of Paramount and Skydance, the decision was made to move away from the established ‘Kelvin timeline’ and begin a completely new story.
The future of the franchise in theaters is still uncertain, but in November 2025, reports indicated that Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley – the team behind the 2023 film Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves – were writing a new script. This movie will reportedly be a standalone story, not connected to any existing films or TV shows in the series.
At CinemaCon, Paramount announced another Star Trek movie is in the works, but didn’t share any specific details. With so many new Star Trek shows on TV over the last ten years, it’s logical that the franchise would also return to the big screen to complement its success on television.
A new Star Trek movie has been announced shortly after Paramount decided to cancel Star Trek: Starfleet Academy before it even premiered on Paramount+, after only two seasons. The other current Star Trek series, Strange New Worlds, will also conclude with its fifth season, though season four is still coming later this year.
Currently, there aren’t any new Star Trek TV shows being developed. However, the recently announced movie provides an opportunity to revitalize the franchise. It has the potential to energize the series without disrupting established storylines. How exactly the movie will launch this new direction is still unknown.
