As a lifelong “Trekkie” who has witnessed the evolution of this franchise from its humble beginnings on television to its cinematic grandeur, I can say with absolute certainty that this 45th Anniversary Deluxe Edition of Jerry Goldsmith’s score for “Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition” is a glorious addition to any fan’s collection.

About four and a half decades past, the “Star Trek” series embarked on an exciting venture – the big screen. Now, the music that accompanied this journey is being transmitted once more, reaching the hearts, thoughts, and collections of devoted fans.

On November 15th, a special edition of composer Jerry Goldsmith’s “Star Trek: The Motion Picture – The Director’s Edition” score will be unveiled. This project is a collaboration between Enjoy the Ride Records and Paramount Music.

As a passionate cinephile and fan of the original Star Trek series, I’m thrilled to share that Bruce Botnick, Goldsmith’s longtime engineer and the initial album producer, has meticulously restored, remastered, and remixed 80 minutes of music from Robert Wise’s big-screen update. This musical journey will be immortalized on double 140-gram vinyl records!

The movie ‘Star Trek: The Motion Picture,’ originally released in 1979, has a rich and complex history within the broader Star Trek multimedia narrative. After its initial theatrical release, it was extended for television in 1983, followed by the creation of a director’s cut for DVD in 2001, under the persuasion of Matessino and producer David C. Fein. However, it wasn’t until 2022 that the director’s cut was fully restored and upgraded to high definition by Paramount Home Video. This included modernizing the computer graphics to meet contemporary standards, thereby realizing Wise’s original vision for the film. These updated versions have significantly influenced its critical reception over the years, encouraging both casual viewers and dedicated fans to reassess its artistic value, especially in light of ‘Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan,’ which is often considered the best film in the series.

Despite changes in the franchise, Goldsmith’s score continues to be a standout musical piece, with its main theme later used for “Star Trek: The Next Generation.” This tune is almost as famous as Alexander Courage’s original themes from the 1960s TV series. This vinyl release marks the second time Enjoy the Ride Records has reissued the director’s edition to celebrate the film’s 45th anniversary, updating the packaging and artwork accordingly.

On this coming Friday, November 15th at 12:00 PM Eastern Time, the premium version of “Star Trek: The Motion Picture — The Director’s Edition” hits the shelves. In the United States, Enjoy The Ride and Light in the Attic Records will offer unique color vinyl versions as exclusives. Meanwhile, At The Movies plans to release additional variants for sale in Europe.
