The fourth season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is set to continue the show’s tradition of exciting storytelling. Announced at CCXP Mexico, the new season will premiere on Paramount+ on Thursday, July 23rd. This season will have the usual 10 episodes, but the fifth and final season will be shorter, with only 6 episodes.
The title Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is unique among Star Trek shows. Most series are named after their starship or setting—like Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, Voyager, Enterprise, Discovery, and Starfleet Academy. Star Trek: Picard is named for its lead character, and Star Trek: Lower Decks and Prodigy have titles that suggest their overall themes.
The title Star Trek: Strange New Worlds clearly tells viewers what the Enterprise is all about – discovering new and unusual planets. It’s a nod to the original Star Trek‘s famous goal: to explore the unknown, find new life forms, and venture where no one has gone before.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4 Will Live Up To Its Title Again
As a longtime Trek fan, I just watched the teaser for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4, and I’m relieved to see the show is doubling down on what makes it great: exploration. Captain Pike, played brilliantly by Anson Mount, pretty much lays out the season’s core mission in a voiceover – it’s all about venturing into the unknown again, and honestly, that’s exactly what I wanted to hear.
I’ve always been drawn to adventure and have a habit of exploring things that others would consider best left untouched.
The trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 offers a peek at some unusual planets, like one inhabited by dinosaurs – potentially even ancient Earth – and another resembling a Wild West landscape with strange rock formations and plant life. The crew of the USS Enterprise will also be meeting new alien species.
The return of space exploration in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a good thing. The show initially brought back the classic Star Trek: The Original Series format of exploring new worlds and encountering new lifeforms. However, the show’s second season took a different turn with successful comedic and musical episodes, moving away from that original focus.
Season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds focused less on traditional exploration and more on ambitious, creative episodes – similar to the show’s popular musical installment – designed to showcase the cast’s range. The season experimented with different genres, including more comedic and unconventional stories, but fans had a varied reaction.
Big Swings Will Still Be Part Of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 4
The trailer for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 highlights the show’s focus on exploring space, but the new season will actually build on the ambitious storytelling of season 3. Like season 3, season 4 was created to try fresh approaches to Star Trek and give the Strange New Worlds actors a chance to shine.
A surprising element of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 4 is an episode featuring puppets, created with help from Jim Henson Productions and first revealed at San Diego Comic-Con 2025. After lukewarm reactions to season 3 of Strange New Worlds and criticism of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy, Paramount+ chose to minimize promotion for season 4’s more unusual episodes, including the puppet show.
Season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds promises to feature more exploration of new planets and alien civilizations. While season 3 introduced the ancient alien threat of the Vezda, the majority of the episodes were set on the Starship Enterprise, limiting the number of new worlds we saw.
It remains to be seen exactly how many new planets and alien species the USS Enterprise will discover in season 4 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, but things are looking promising. Rebecca Romijn has hinted that her character, Lt. Commander Una Chin-Riley, will be leading more expeditions to unexplored worlds.
