Star Trek: Prodigy Canceled?! Showrunners Break Silence!

Currently, the team aboard the U.S.S. Protostar finds themselves without a platform for streaming, as the animated, child-friendly Star Trek series was taken down last week and plans are underway to remove the show’s initial two seasons by January.

Despite the current situation with Netflix, the creators behind the show aren’t losing faith in the success of the animated series. In fact, it has nearly a flawless 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Dan and Kevin Hageman, the masterminds behind “Prodigy”, have publicly discussed the removal of the series from Netflix and shared their thoughts about its future. This show follows an eclectic team of aliens who join forces after discovering a deserted spaceship.

The Co-Creators are Hopeful

On X, Dan and Kevin Hageman expressed that the potential removal of Star Trek Prodigy from Netflix is concerning, but it’s not due to poor viewership or anything underhanded. The license for Season 1 expires on June 24, and Season 2 on December 31. They remain optimistic that someone will continue airing the show. The upcoming generation of Star Trek enthusiasts truly deserve to keep watching it.

The animated Star Trek series titled Prodigy debuted on Paramount+ in October 2021, followed by airing on Nickelodeon later that year. In 2023, Netflix obtained the show when it was taken off Paramount+. Season 2 of Prodigy was released on Netflix last year. However, due to the expiration of the licensing contract, the first season of Prodigy will depart from Netflix on June 24, and its second season will do so on January 1.

The series highlighted Ella Purnell as Gwyn, Rylee Alazraqui as Rok-Tahk, Brett Gray as Dal, Agnes Imrie as Zero,K, and Jason Mantzoukas as Jankom Pog. Notably, it saw the comeback of Captain Kathryn Janeway, played by Kate Mulgrew, who was a prominent figure in the series. Additionally, Robert Beltran reappeared as Captain Chakotay, both continuing their previous roles. Furthermore, the holographic doctor from Voyager was also voiced again, with the original voice actor yet to be specified.

Kate Mulgrew Wanted a Third Season

Speaking about the next season, Mulgrew expressed her desire for it to happen, stating, “I’m definitely looking forward to seeing more of this storyline involving Janeway and Chakotay, with The Doctor thrown in as well.” She added that she has two long-time friends on the show, Robert Beltran and Bob Picardo, and hinted at a possible tragic twist. In her words, “I enjoy a bit of tragedy with my storylines, just like I like a little tragedy with my soup.

Another Family-Friendly Trek is Reportedly in the Works

Only a few days have passed since the announcement of Prodigy’s removal from Netflix, and it has now been revealed that this isn’t the end for the franchise. Instead, it appears to be evolving into a children’s television show. A document filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office on May 1, 2025, describes the project as a “multimedia series with animation distributed across multiple platforms.

It’s said that a new series, named “Star Trek: Starfleet Scouts, ” is expected to join the “Trek-verse, and this kid-friendly production is rumored to be released as digital animated shorts, possibly on YouTube.

Excluding Star Trek: Prodigy, the entire Star Trek collection can currently be streamed on Paramount+. At present, only Star Trek: Prodigy is available for streaming on Netflix.
