Star Trek: Online adds free playable Typhoon cruiser, Lower Decks cosmetics, but delays new story content

As a lifelong Star Trek enthusiast and a dedicated player of Star Trek: Online since its inception, this latest update has truly sent my heart soaring! The addition of the long-awaited Typhoon Battlecruiser, a ship I’ve admired from afar for over a decade, is a dream come true.

In the most recent version of Star Trek: Online, players will now have access to a ship that was initially introduced at launch in 2010 but never playable until this point. This long-awaited vessel is likely familiar to seasoned players. Additionally, this update brings elements inspired by the animated series Star Trek: Lower Decks, while developer Cryptic has announced a postponement of the planned main story campaign content.

Initially, developer Cryptic Studios had planned to launch a new main story episode for the game in 2024. However, due to the shift of Star Trek: Online’s management and continued development to DECA Games, this release has been postponed. Instead, the next major story installment will be unveiled during the game’s 15th anniversary celebration, tentatively scheduled for either late January or February 2025.

The playable Typhoon Battlecruiser, though newly accessible, carries a sense of familiarity: It was initially encountered as an NPC ship in advanced regions. This vast Federation starship was previously the most formidable type of enemy in combat during high-level encounters within the Federation. Despite never being made playable initially, it was later phased out as developer Cryptic enhanced the graphics and production quality of Star Trek: Online. Now, the ship has been redesigned and upgraded for current gameplay with advanced statistics. Players who partake in the ongoing “Dimensional Typhoon” limited-time event can acquire it themselves.

Alongside the Typhoon update, there were also some complimentary and paid-for goods inspired by Star Trek: Lower Decks. The freebies include a hairstyle reminiscent of Vulcan Lieutenant T’Lyn and a cybernetic implant similar to Lieutenant Sam Rutherford’s own.

In this top-tier collection of Lower Decks, you’ll find combat tools inspired by Orion swords and Betazoid batons, along with attire modeled after the clothing of Mark Twain, and interactive pets mimicking Badgey, the mischievous cartoon villain. These unique items can be purchased using Lobi store credits, which can be earned either by unlocking premium lockbox items or joining temporary event campaigns.

Star Trek: Online can be played on personal computers, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The Dimensional Typhoon event will continue until October 17, 2024.
