Season 2 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy might significantly shift the power dynamics within the United Federation of Planets. In the first season’s finale, Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter) and the students and teachers at Starfleet Academy successfully prevented Nus Braka (Paul Giamatti) from carrying out his plan to kill billions, obliterate planets, and permanently halt warp travel for future generations.
Set a year after the events of Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy follows the Class of 3196. The Federation is rebuilding in the 32nd century, following a catastrophic event called The Burn that halted warp travel and fractured their planetary alliance. Starfleet Academy represents this renewed hope, and Chancellor Ake is leading the first group of cadets to train in San Francisco on Earth in over a century.
Season one of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy briefly touches on larger events within the Federation, such as efforts to reconcile with the Betazoids and finding a new home for the struggling Klingon Empire. Fleet Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr) acts as the Federation’s representative at Starfleet Academy, reporting to Federation President Laira Rillak (Chelah Horsdal) – at least, that’s the case currently.
The Federation’s Balance Of Power May Start To Change In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 2
Okay, so I’m really intrigued by what Season 2 of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy might bring. It sounds like things could get seriously complicated for President Laira Rillak! Remember, she just got elected at the beginning of Discovery Season 4, right around the time they reopened the Academy. I have a feeling this new season will really test her leadership, and maybe even threaten her presidency. It’s going to be interesting to see how it all plays out!
Season four of Star Trek: Discovery is set in the year 3190. Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season one starts in 3192 and finishes at the end of the 3193 school year. Season two of Starfleet Academy will conclude before the summer of 3194, a year that also includes a presidential election for President Rillak.
The upcoming presidential election might be subtly woven into the later episodes of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 2. While President Rillak wasn’t actually seen in season 1, characters often talked about him. However, the President could have a more significant presence in the show’s second season.
Dealing with politics and politicians is a regular part of life for Starfleet officers. For cadets at Starfleet Academy, a Federation presidential election offers valuable real-world experience, especially now that the President is stationed on Betazed – the home planet of both Ocam and Tarima Sadal.
Why The Federation President Is More Important Than Ever In Star Trek’s 32nd Century
Federation Presidents have made brief appearances in several Star Trek productions, including The Voyage Home, The Undiscovered Country, and Deep Space Nine, but they weren’t major characters. Laira Rillak became the first Federation President to play a significant role when she appeared in season 4 of Star Trek: Discovery.
President Rillak appeared multiple times in season 4 of Star Trek: Discovery, where he kept a close watch on Captain Michael Burnham’s (Sonequa Martin-Green) investigation into the Dark Matter Anomaly. He often challenged Burnham’s approach as the captain of the USS Discovery.
When Rillak first came on board the USS Discovery, let’s just say we weren’t immediately friends. But as the ship headed into uncharted territory, trying to make contact with the creators of the DMA – Species 10-C – Burnham and Rillak really started to understand each other, and respect what the other brought to the table. By season 5 of Star Trek: Discovery, Rillak had a lot of faith in Burnham’s ability to locate the ancient tech of the Progenitors. It was cool to see that relationship develop!
In the 32nd century, the Federation is trying to rebuild its strength and importance, but it remains unstable. The events of the first season finale of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy – where Nus Braka almost destroyed the Federation – demonstrated how easily the alliance could fall, particularly with so many enemies hoping to prevent its growth.
President Laira Rillak led the Federation through successful times and was rescued from a crisis by the starships USS Discovery and USS Athena. However, her position isn’t guaranteed, and a strong challenger could arise to compete for the Federation’s leadership in the second season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy.
Whether it’s good or bad, the political landscape of the Federation might change if President Laira Rillak doesn’t get re-elected. Even though Paramount+ has canceled it, the second season of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy could still offer compelling stories about galactic politics.
